Today's woods hunt:smile:

Hunted a wooded area today and mostly followed the trails hunting out 5 or so yards. Good targets are usually few, but on occasion a few good things come to light. Today was one of those days. My first good target(s) were a small coin spill. All clad, but got 2 dimes, 2 nickels and 3 Memorial cents. After a couple more clad digs, I dug the bullet. It came in at 57/58 and was about 4" deep. (Elton, this bullet will be on its way to you shortly. Gotta get you in the groove) Another nickel and dime was dug and then I got an 88-90 reading. It sounded great and hung on an 88-90 reading. Just one good scoop of dirt and there that lovely lady laid, a 1907D Barber half. Yes, I was along and was able to do the happy dance. A few feet later I dug the "cowman" cap gun. Left side cylinder is missing. The Last good target I dug was the small, thin marked 925 silver ring. This came in at 55/56. I was digging everything that locked on pretty good and repeated from 50 up. Under normal circumstances the ring probably would have been missed, unless the site had the potential for IH cents. In 38 year's of swinging, the Barber half in only my second, if I recall correctly. Beautiful day here, for sure. HH jim tn

Nice bullet! It's a Sharps ring-tail variant. The cartridge was tied around the small base projection in the groove provided for that purpose. Both north and south Cavalry used these during the Civil War.

Gary, thanks for the info on the bullet. That is the second one I have found on this spot. The other was a couple years ago. Again, thanks. HH jim tn

Hey Jim, You're WAY AHEAD of me!! In 11 PLUS yrs. of detecting, I've NEVER FOUND a SILVER HALF, yet alone a BARBER!! I find QUITE A BIT of
SILVER Jewelry though!! Les Robinson

Thanks everyone. I just got in from putting 3 1/2 hours in on the same area and this morning was a near bust. 2 wheats, a few pieces of clad and a modern pistol bullet. Know there are still some goodies there, though. It is a tough spot to hunt. Lots of undergrowth, down trees and branches. The B P mode with its air gap really helps on this site. Many places the coil is 4 or 5" off the ground, but can still hit targets at good depth. Yes, crusher, I too wish the gun fit the bullet. found a lot of cap guns over the years, but never a real gun. A few parts, though. Everyone dig good this weekend, that can get out. HH jim tn
