HI guys,
Tommorow i'm going to buy a new minelab quattro!. Im new to this forum and hope to post some aussie pictures of my finds!. If anyone is interested let me know. We have a lot of ghost towns in Australia and a lot of beaches and a lot of goldfields. So my options are pretty good!. Ive been metal detecting for years with a whites coinmaster. Now it's time to move up in the world!. I hope the minelab quattro stands up to it's name. Even so it's manufactured in South Australia my home state. Good Luck to all of you. Happy Treasure hunting!

Right on Gary. I've never used the Whites, but I have a Quatro, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'm dying to know what you come up with, especially in Australia. Send us some pictures if you have a camera or just tell us what you find, and congratulations on buying the Quatro.:|:geek::yo:

Hi Garyd163,
You will enjoy the Quattro vey much. Just takes a bit of time and regular use to understand it. My husband bought an Explorer ll and sometimes I get on it and have a go. It's a bit more complicated, but you can set it to a similar mode as the Quattro. Anyway, I loveeee my machine! Glad I bought one!
Cheers Angela

How ya doin' finn? I've been away for a while, trying to fix my life among other things. Havn't had much time to detect lately. Just got bit by a pit bull last Saturday at a place called Dog Beach, here in San Diego. Boy what fun that was and still is. He took a pretty big bite into my thumb and even though it seems to be heeling pretty well, I havn't had the money or the insurance to go into a doctor so I'm worried sick about tetnus. The guy told me his dog had all his shots then disappeared on me before I could get his number. I finally found a cheap clinic I could get the tetnus shot in, but it's getting a little late to have it do any good. I'm not sure about that, so I'm gonna try and get into the doctor there tomorrow. Take my advice, don't ever try and break up a dog fight unless you have a cattle prod or something. Talk at ya later and hope things are doing well.

Hi beachguy777,
How's this for a story! My other half a few years ago accidentally cut the tip off one of his fingers, and as he was about to pick up the finger tip, a dalmation dog came by and ate it! Ugh! It's true! Makes me sick thinking about it!
What a weird world we live in!
Cheers Angela:wiggle:

Talk about rubbing salt in an open wound - I cannot imagine having a body part cut off let alone having a dog (a Dalmation no less) coming along and gobbling it down before I could retrieve it!!!!
That story is so bizarre that it made me do a double take.

Yea, things have been too weird this month, however I did manage to find a community health clinic that let me in for 30 bucks and they'll bill me for the tetnus shot they gave me and the antibiotics. I sure hope I made it in time, and I'm still a little worried about the rabies thing, since the guy with the dog split the scene right after his dog bit me. Pretty nice guy, hugh? Oh don't get me wrong here. I know I live in California, probably the lawsuit capital of the United States, but it sure would have been nice to find out FOR SURE, if his dog had his shots or not, like maybe seeing proof somewhere with paperwork.
At any rate, I'd sure handle things different if that ever happened again. Probably wouldn't stick my hand in between the dogs to try and break them up, and I'd follow the guy back to his car to get his license plate. When I talked to the the animal control guys today, they said, they have the authority to run plates if it looks like a questionable deal. Well you know something else, finn? I guess now is the opportune time to tell the treasure hunting world out there, that it might not be a bad idea for all of us to get a tetnus shot. I know that sounds nuts, but I went online and read about tetnus, and guess who's one of the big people at risk to get it? People who dig in the dirt, especially in risky places that might have tetnus, like an old cow pasture or something. I hope everybody gets my jist here. We're probably fairly good candidates to contact this stuff, so I'm glad now that I have the shot because they told me it would be good for 5 years.
I guess that's not gonna do us any good if we're digging in and old park somewhere where addicts throw away their old needles that might have hepatitus C or something, but it should protect you from tetnus. Please don't feel like I'm trying to rain on everybody's parade here, but let's face it, this is real world stuff and we need to try and take whatever precautions we can. One deterrent might even be using a shovel to dig with and a good sifter to sift the stuff out first. It would probably give you a better chance of seeing an old needle first BEFORE it got you. At any rate, I hope everybody is having a good holiday season and finding some good stuff out there, wherever you are. Take care finn, and again, I hope I didn't totally bum everybody out here. I just know I learned a few things here from that dog bite experience and I hope to never repeat it the same way again.

Finn, I think I did it again. I probably posted to the wrong post, but all this stuff is weird if you ask me. Thank goodness were all still here in one piece, more or less. I know Jerry Garcia, from the Grateful Dead lost one of his fingers when his brother accidently chopped it off with an ax. He still managed to play guitar and pedal steel guitar, which I play too. I'm amazed that he could still play the steel guitar cause you need at least a thumb and 2 fingers on your picking hand to pick the strings with. I think he just skipped the finger that was missing and used his Thumb, 1st and 4th finger. Ok, I'm done talking all this crazy stuff except to remind you of that Bobbett chick that cut off her husbands (you know what) and I guess they were able to sew it back on. That's probably the only one that could beat the dalmation story, but not by much. By, by everybody and have a nice Christmas if I don't get back on here and drive you poor people crazy with more stories.:spin::|:O:(:geek:

Hi Beachguy777,
You know what? I've thought about this too: if it's possible to catch something from the dirt because as you say, detectorists have a chance of may-be catching something like tetnus. But what about me, when I go bottling, find a dump and I'm in the dirt up to my knees, or more! I"ve even been inside some pretty deep holes when digging (along with the Alpine wolf spiders that like to roll out of the dirt with no warning!). Well anyway, I'm a mess by the time I finish whipping out the old bottles, and so I've come to wonder if it's possible to catch anything or not. Anyway, I would think that to catch tetnus, you'd first have to cut yourself, and dirt then gets into the wound, and if not cleaned properly, it could get infected. I think if you're coming across rusty tin cans, etc, is where the risk could lie also. I believe that the tetnus injection is a logical thing to get, as you say, it covers you for 5 years. I guess it's a good precaution. As for the local wildlife, the only thing I have to worry about are the deer, wombats, lyrebirds, spiders, bull ants and snakes. (I've had a nasty experiance with bull ants). So that's not too bad.....!!!!! Hope you're feeling better soon.
Cheers Angela:rolleyes:

Angela, thanks for the return post. It makes me think I'm not just talking crazy stuff and waisting everybody's time, which I have to really be careful not to do. I do respect everybody on the forum and I realize I get a little crazy from time to time, but honestly, thanks for responding to my post in such a positive way. While we're talking about it... I do watch a lot of the Animal Planit shows and stuff on TV and I'm noticed that Australia seems to have the most "bad guys" as far as serious animal and insect critters. I think you have the Tipan, which is no snake to mess with and the funnel web spider which I understand is a very dangerous spider, maybe even found around Sidney. I guess that's one bad a--, spider and thank God they have anti venum for it in most of the local hospitals. I hadn't even heard about the bull ants. They don't sound like too much fun. I got attacked by some red ants down in Louisiana one time and literally had to pull my pants off and rub them all off they were biting me so bad. I sweare that's true. Pretty embarrassing, but, hey, "what ya gonna do" when something like that happens. All my pride went out the window at that point. All I wanted to do was get those ants off of me. Keep those stories and pictures coming in on the net. I love it, and I bet the others do to. Marc Trainor, "beach guy" I only grabed that name because I used to surf here when I was younger, in San Diego, California. Thanks again, Angela.:geek::|:|:O:geek:

Gi'day Mark (beachguy!),
About those bull ants, they're about 1 inch long and have huge pincers on their mouths. When they bite, they keep on biting. I was out bottling one day, and I was so excited whipping out bottles with dirt all over me, I didn't notice all the bull ants crawling out the dirt. Next I knew they were in my clothes. I was being bitten everywhere! Of course, I went a little spastic (good thing no one was around at the time), and stripped off my clothes. I was covered in bite marks, that left whopping bruises all over. Well, once I gave my clothes the all clear, popped them back on. I was so embassed, and felt like a complete idiot! I honestly never thought it would happen to me. I felt quite ill all day (more so because of the thoughts of bull ants crawling all over me) than from being bitten. Well, I'm extra careful now. If I see them on the road, or where ever I give way! It hasn't dampened my spirit for detecting or bottling. Nothing' going to stop now!
Cheers Angela:)

Here in west Texas I just go to the city health department and you can get a tetanus shot for $15.00. It is a good thing to put on your every five year list. Stomping around old camps I have stepped on an old rusty nail and have gotten cut by barbed wire and pieces of tin.

Never dig with your bare hands.
And if it is really dusty a dust mask could save your life thanks to haunta virus and a number of other air born pathogens.
