hi everybody i live in the uk and have had my etrac about 2 months i love the detector and the pastime of detecting but i am tone deaf sure i can hear grunts and high bleeps but my ears dont recognise the sounds you guys talk about it is a bit like colour blindness i suppose with no discrim it leaves me totally confused and unable to function i have read many other forums which say get used to the sounds well that will not happen so what i am doing is putting discrim upto about 16 i am working on mulit conduct and i am going out there finding some nice artifacts old coins no gold or silver can anyone give me any better advice i seem to be getting good depth are there any better programs that will help me i am looking forward to posting some photos when i get some good finds lol i will appreciate any advice thanks lovely reading all your posts

See if you can tell the difference between the sounds in Two Tone Ferrous. If so I would probably use that. Gaz, who is over there in England, as I understand it uses strictly TTF over there anyway.

thankyou for that are you saying leave the screen open why do we do that please as it seems to give multi sounds if it is contaminated with iron surely that just confuses things if the etrac is so good at discrim why doesnt everybody just discrim most of the iron out.............. simple answer please not too technival lol what is ttf please

I would go back and look at Gaz's comments on TTF. Its been probably last July or August. There was some real good discussion on that and also you might try the E-Trac Classroom part of this forum. For short, In two tone ferrous all iron (with the exception of a little false signals and beeps) will be a low grunt. Non iron targets will give a higher sound. Thats all you have to listen to. 2 sounds.

thank you nebtrac for your input i will try and find article and read it i am having a great time with the etrac its abit addictive but stopped in my tracks today as we have snow in england grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr two tone sounds like it could be my answer but if i am looking to dig grunts upto 17 mark can i just discrim up to this line and leave me with digging everything will this work or not and what will i lose is it depth thanks for your help where do you live i live in lincoln near lincoln cathedral uk

oh two tone ferrous i will be back to normal digging the higher tones ignoring grunts ok this is so much fun cant wait for the snow to go

I for sure would talk to Gaz. He just posted today or yesterday.

I'm was just wondering if you could hear the difference between the two tones. Can you do a test by setting your machine up in Two Tone Ferrous and swipe a coin across the coil and see if you can hear the high tone, then swipe a nail and see if you can hear the low tone. If so you shouldn't have any problem running that setup.

thanks for yor input nebtrac and as i said it has been snowing here but hey who cares i have been out detecting and yes i have used two tone ferrous i have blocked out upto seventeen and dug my targets with confidence they came through loud and clear not muffled out by all that iron and i dug one buckle one piece of horse harness and one king edward seventh farthing when it snowed i retreated inside quite happy that i was getting targets on land that has been nighthawked for years i know you avid detectorists dont agree with discrim but why if the etrac does it so well it sort of a new era in detectors where you can actually get rid of the rubbish doing it my way please explain what will i be missing if i get an iffy signal i do use an open quickmask to see if its iron any help is really appreciated thanks for your time i am learning as fast as i can and cant help smiling when i hit something solid wowww thanks

I know the tones are a bit over whelming for me too. Sometimes I'm not sure if I can tell the difference in all the tones. I am feel that if I had enough time on the machine it would all come together eventually. I don't think anything else out there can touch it. :starwars:

there is no doubt in my mind that the etrac is an amazing machine and i congratulate minelab on its performance i cant get out grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr for three days as thick with snow to try all your suggestions very frustrating am going to keep on the two tone ferrous as i cant stand it when it starts singing like a canary on crack it is just too much information for my ears to sort out so i will keep tones simple
