Tones?

What are the tones that are strong, but don't register a number? And what does it mean when the detector freaks out and jumps around usually showing dashes and a bunch of squealing, what is that?

Usually from what I seen in the last couple days those are those hot sand spots that I was talking about in the other post you made. When I get one I watch the phase # in the right hand corner and see if the phase # is close to the left hand phase # if its like with in 10 - 15 #'s off from ur ground balance I dig it and usually find a tab or bottle top or a piece of iron but when the #'s are way off I just pass it up and tell myself it was that mineralized sand aka black sand and move on. Mind u I'm still learning my F5 too so not sure I'm the best one to give advice.

Now when the detector is beeping and jumping all over that I do know and it means ur target is right on top of the ground or very close to it.
So are u detecting on beaches?

Have not done any beach hunting yet. Mostly fields and old yards. So the times the detector freaks out, are possible good targets on top? I have been passing them up as trash.

Can't say if they are good targets as in coins or jewelry, could be a nail or whatever that is if your hinting in all metals mode now if your hunting in disc. mode and have set to say only find 5 cents on up then the target that's making ur detector go nuts is right on top. Now to get a target ID when that's going on just raise the detector and see what's the target ID. Hope that helps

When the F5 freaks out and starts squealing at you, thats a overload signal. When you get one of those you need to raise the coil higher and resweep.
Overloads are caused by surface targets that saturate the recieve circuits. Rather than just going quiet, the F5 gives a different sound so that you know you are overloaded and can act appropriatly.

Regarding tones that are strong but don't registar a number....at this point in the game you need to ignore those.

Pretty much what mike said, and if you raise the coil more than a few inches and it still overloads it probably a aluminum can or other large trash target.
