Tony with the waterproof GQ, How deep have you

Jim,
I have the box belt mounted just above my waist, so, in neck deep water, I guess this puts the unit under about 2 feet of water. I have had the unit submerged for continuous periods in excess of one hour at this depth, and never had so much as a drop of water get in
The single most important feature of the box is the accuracy/precision of the 2 drill holes, so as to prevent water seeping under the cable gland O-ring.
Any poorly drilled holes (cracks/chips/fractures) may well cause water to enter the box.
Also important is to thoroughly rinse the whole box down with fresh water BEFORE opening.
Hope this helps,
Tony.

would do all right in shallow diving situations such as less than 15'? What is the pelican box rated at? I realize this is without holes. Thanks.

Jim,
I can't see why there should be any problems at 15'.
I think the case it rated to 15 metres. The cable glands that I use are rated as IP68.
Here's a link to the site.
The case I use is the Micro-case 1060

Hello Jim and Tony,
I'm having great success with the waterproof cases pictured below, Recently waterproofed two units "Sovereign and GQ" with both using Whites waterproof cases. The Sovereign circuit board is housed inside the Whites Beachhunter ID housing with both waterproof potentiometers and headset, I was able to use the whites 12-volt battery pack to provide the voltage.
The other below is the GQ fitted inside a Whites Pi housing with waterproof potentiometers and waterproof headset, Like the waterproof Sovereign all controls are within reach and can be adjusted from the outside without fear of the cases leaking. Both units are rated to a depth of 100' feet plus. In both cases I had to add on an extra potentiometer to each unit to complete the job of one potentiometer, Instead of one potentiometer completing two functions on the GoldQuest "ON/OFF and Sat speed" I had to separate and have the SAT speed and ON/OFF feature with each having it's own potentiometer. As with the of the Sovereign, I had to separate the Auto feature and sensitively from one potentiometer completing two task to two separate potentiometers.
Yes, Some bugs did occur at first with a couple of trips to the beach and the problems did iron them selfs out with both units performing well. I've shared these waterproof projects with Eric recently through e-mail so I'm sure posting these pics to share with others will hopefully help those wanting to do the same.
Happy holidays,
Paul (Ca)

Paul,
Superb engineering....probably beyond my capabilities ?
That's why I kept my set-up so simple...didn't want to tackle anything that was beyond me. However, the GQSS in the Pelican case has worked great. I have considered extending the ON/OFF/THRESHOLD and REJECT pots through the case with appropriate waterproof knobs. I would need to extend the actual control "spines" so they are long enough to pass through the Pelican case. Generally, I never need to adjust the settings once I know where I'm going to hunt, but having access to these two settings isn't something I've ruled out

Happy holidays Tony,
You did a splendid job with placing your GQ inside a Pelican case, And the cost of the Pelican case is fantastic. My hats off to you for sharing your project with others which puts helpful ideas in our heads, Job well done
To keep your unit stock and keeps it's value it would be best to not do any mods to the GQ unless you plan on keeping the unit long term, Your setup is probably the best and most cost efective..
Happy holidays,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Paul......I can't see myself changing from the GQSS for many years, and I only ever have one detector at a time.
Yes, the exchange of information across the internet is an amazing thing, it's like having the person next door and not 10,000 miles away.
Hope to get to California in a few years time as my 4 year old son knows all about Disneyland now Better start on saving some money real soon
All the best for Xmas,
Tony.
