Too much time on my hands...

Been laid up a bit lately and found myself thinking WAY too much. But, I thought I would toss a couple questions out to the group. Always nice to get input from fellow detectorists. Question 1. Are there any VDI readings on the MXT that ALWAYS prove to be trash? Seems like rings can show up reading just about anywhere and I wondered if any specific targets could be passed by without reservation. How about those negative numbers? (e.g. is 32 always a pulltab? ) If your answer to this question is yes, then I would appreciate knowing what your experience has been and what those numbers are. Not for the good stuff. Just the definite bad stuff. If your answer is NO, and that you dig all signals, then I have a second question for you. If you dig every signal, why did you chose a machine with a display? I know the MXT is a great machine and has excellent depth and separation. But if you dig every target, regardless of reading, why did you feel you needed a display? Hopefully this will stir up some interesting conversation. thanks HH

Hi Randy. Im new to using the MXT so I dig all the positive VDIs for now until I get to know the machine better. The reason I bought it was that I can hunt in all metal (even the C&J mode extends down into the iron range) and go by meter readings to help ID targets. I dont like using disc at all because of masking.
I think with the meter I have more versatility also in that if I am at a beach searching for gold, I can ignore the higher VDI numbers that are usually clad coins or silver jewelry and better spend my time hunting for the gold. I dont get out as often as it seems others do so time is an important factor when hunting for me. The same goes when I am hunting for silver coins. I wont bother with the lower readings hunting say an old homesite area either factoring in the chance of finding a gold ring or any type of gold is slim and again, time factors in and I want to maximize my hunting. I did read here that a guy posted that $5 dollar gold coins usually fall into the VDI 50-55 range so now I will dig anything in that range also if at an older site.
If anyone here on this forum knows the VDI readings that particular gold coins fall into and would post them it would help alot of us for sure.

Lot's of silver rings, dimes & quarters and those small cache of coins left when that blanket is picked up all read high.

Randy,
Your questions are ageless and perplex us all. If you think on them too long it will drive you to drink.... HUMMMM... that ain't all bad...
Your questions are what prompted my gold VDI post a week or so ago. I was frustrated with primarily the 37 - 40 range and asked if anyone ever found good stuff in that range, I only seem to dig pull-tabs or small aluminum fragments in that range. The response was that good stuff "has been found" in those ranges. GO FIGURE.
I like seeing the VDI's because I think we are all inquisitive and try to make sense of all these readings to find that "ultimate logical answer" that we will never find. I am copping out a bit but it is true that as soon as you think you have the answer you will see a post that proves you wrong.
This is only my second year but have found some nice goodies so far this year. I now have the "gold bug" and have some parks that are full of pull-tab readings. I will attempt to dig these since I believe other detectorist in the area discriminiate them out. My hourly rate and attitude may soon suffer and I may find myself back to digging only good signals after about 20 hours of this.
To prove my point, I think anyway, the last gold ring I found read a sold VDI of 18. I found it in a play area of a park I have just recently started to hunt. The area has three large play areas and on my first trip there only found 1 dime, 2 pennies and the gold ring. That park is hunted.
I don't see many detectorist in my area... .... but have talked to several in some local jewelry and coin shops closer to the city. Most of them discriminate out the nickel range.
HH,
Johnny B

Absolutely Johnny B. Ill take a couple of gold rings anyday versus clad or the occasional piece of silver.
For me its maximizing my time, but in the future when I retire my hunting time will be increased.
Ive done the "dig all" at the ocean for many years and have found that it pays off better to go for the lower conductive stuff.
Im glad to see someones out there cleaning all those zinc pennies out of the ground.....the good Lord knows Ive found my share of them.

As someone once said, the best and cheapest disc is a shovel and theres a lot of truth to that. When in doubt dig. As the other poster mentioned location has a bearing on what signals you dig too,Mike M
