I found out a couple of weeks back, that one of the grey nomads at work was into detecting. Finally got to talk to him earlier this week to find out what he uses. He has the 2500. He bought it about 10 months back, but had only done a few hunts with it. It didn't take much to get him to come out and play, so the date was set for today. Having only seen the 1500 in the flesh (OK , plastic then) I was surprised at how much bigger the control box was. I was also surprised at the lack of extra weight that it caused. He had never used another metal detector before, so I ran through the basics with him. Having a play with it was fun and I found that the voice was quite cute as well. The buttons were very soft to the touch but seemed to easily get stuck on. I can see why folks like this machine. After putting out a mixer of coins and junk, to show him what to expect, it soon became apparent that there was a significant fault with the audio, so I suggested that he send it back for repair. It turns out, that he had been getting frustrated with it and this was why. He was quite relieved to know that it was just a fault in the machine. Hopefully he'll get it repaired soon. Anyway, I gave him my GTI and he had a good hunt with that instead. He didn't find much, but enjoyed the fact that he was getting a reliable unit to work with and learned a bit for the day. I used the Ace as the back up today and was impressed with how well it performed alongside the 1500. Rob checked targets with the GTi, then I went over them with the Ace to confirm. I was impressed with the speed that the Ace can do this over the GTI. It must be just the extra time that I have on it.
We were doing fairly poorly at the first spot, so we went to the local showground for the last part of the day. We didn't do any better there either. The ground here was just chronic with pull tabs and I suggested to Rob to notch them out. I had barley spoken these words when I was totally gob smacked by what happened next! A guy wondered up to us and asked what we were doing. He was collecting cans, and then proceeded to eyeball ALL the pull tabs that he could and collected them as well!!!
I was speechless.
