Took a new Garrett hunting buddy out today.

I found out a couple of weeks back, that one of the grey nomads at work was into detecting. Finally got to talk to him earlier this week to find out what he uses. He has the 2500. He bought it about 10 months back, but had only done a few hunts with it. It didn't take much to get him to come out and play, so the date was set for today. Having only seen the 1500 in the flesh (OK , plastic then) I was surprised at how much bigger the control box was. I was also surprised at the lack of extra weight that it caused. He had never used another metal detector before, so I ran through the basics with him. Having a play with it was fun and I found that the voice was quite cute as well. The buttons were very soft to the touch but seemed to easily get stuck on. I can see why folks like this machine. After putting out a mixer of coins and junk, to show him what to expect, it soon became apparent that there was a significant fault with the audio, so I suggested that he send it back for repair. It turns out, that he had been getting frustrated with it and this was why. He was quite relieved to know that it was just a fault in the machine. Hopefully he'll get it repaired soon. Anyway, I gave him my GTI and he had a good hunt with that instead. He didn't find much, but enjoyed the fact that he was getting a reliable unit to work with and learned a bit for the day. I used the Ace as the back up today and was impressed with how well it performed alongside the 1500. Rob checked targets with the GTi, then I went over them with the Ace to confirm. I was impressed with the speed that the Ace can do this over the GTI. It must be just the extra time that I have on it.
We were doing fairly poorly at the first spot, so we went to the local showground for the last part of the day. We didn't do any better there either. The ground here was just chronic with pull tabs and I suggested to Rob to notch them out. I had barley spoken these words when I was totally gob smacked by what happened next! A guy wondered up to us and asked what we were doing. He was collecting cans, and then proceeded to eyeball ALL the pull tabs that he could and collected them as well!!!:surprised: I was speechless.

You are a good guy for sure. Anytime you want to go MD'ing with me, I'll show you some finds a little different than what you are use to.

I collect all my pulltabs and any laying around,.I do this because the pulltads are for kids who need wheelchairs. This is an ongoing thing in the schools and where in the city. This will also take them out where I hunt for next time I go in that area .:pulltab:

Sounds good John.
I didn't get to swing a detector last week in Canberra. We got within a block of Parliament House a couple of times, but I couldn't get a shot of it either. It's a very impressive building. Sorry about that. The kids got to see snow for the first time though. Actually, I took the youngest son to soccer to a neighbouring town, but had we driven for another 100kms. we would have seen more. It must have only been a few degrees through the day.Brrrrrr.(Probably warm by your winter standards though.)

Mick you should invite that bloke out every time you go hunting just get him to walk 3m ahead of you & you"ll never have to dig another pull tab. on second thoughts send him down here i could do with someone like that. it"s amazing how many Garrett users there are in Australia there seems to be more & more showing up all over the place.

Yeah. I was thinking about something like that. What was bizarre at this spot, is, as it was starting to get dark and really trashy; I got lazy and notched out everything except gold coins then had another person come up and ask about getting started in the hobby. I took the Ace back to jewellery mode and you wouldn't believe it, I snagged a 10c piece. (For non Aussies, these are on the main pull tab notch.) Maybe I should hit Phil Sternes up for a commission.

Yeah Garrett is big in the Land of Oz. Remember, the Hand of Faith nugget was found over there with a Garrett.
