Tot lots / elementary schools - to hit the grass or not to hit the grass, that is the question???:detecting:

When you hunt tot lots / elementary schools, do you just hunt the wood chips/sand, or do you hit the grass aswell??? So far I have just been hitting the wood chips/sand then moving on to the next site, and I was wondering if its worth checking out the grass. Usually I have been hitting up 3 or 4 tot lots each time I went out. I have to admit, I am trying to get a high coin count for the year, but on the other hand, thats why I haven't found any old coins yet (all 1965 and newer) and it would be nice to find my first wheat or my first silver. Thanks for your input.

I hit grassy areas too. Not all the kids stand or play in the wood chips. Some stand along the edge talking. Speaking of edge one day I detected in the swingset area of a school playground. It was sand covered and found a few coins and other things. On this day I didn't stop where the grass meet the sand but went out about 4 more feet into the grass. Glad I did as I found this ring:

This is a teardrop shaped .55 carat diamond ring - gold ring but don't remember now what K it was. Others had detected the playground but because I checked the grassy area I found this ring while others didn't. I also found 2 other rings that day. I was a HAPPY camper I can tell you.

Watch for grassy areas from the school to the playground...the path of travel is a good place to check. Also at the base of trees in the area.

Good hunting

I believe Steve in AZ is the local pro of tot lots, but I would say to get a high coin count you need to get the easy stuff like you are doing and move on. Sure there are many coins and other goodies out in the garss, but it will slow you down. If yoo want to find the old stuff, you have to go where it was lost.

that's a gorgeous ring, Pete...Congratulations on terrific detecting! :super:

This is a Simulated Sapphire attached to a gold ring (forgot the K of it)

And then there is this one (pic doesn't do it justice):

This has 25 CZ diamonds and is a gold plated ring. Nice V shape dinner ring.

(found it under a small monkey bar outfit).

TF - The older I get the less I want to dig the grass. And out here it's usually rock hard due to no rain. But on the other hand, just in the tot lots I have dug 170 solid gold things this last 5 years. So do what you want. Also, we have not much history here for old silver & a gold ring or necklace is better than some silver coins - to me. Steve in so az
