Tough first day...

let's just say the first day was an eye opener. 6 hours of being humbled(haha). It didn't seem too funny at the time though! A couple of things I have questions about....First, I became so baffled today by all the tones that I didn't know which way was up. Am I supposed to be listening for just repeatable highpitched tones that show in the upper right part of the screen? What are those single high pitched tones that I cannot get to repeat on a consistent basis, maybe the edge of something that is disc'ed out? Also, every now and then I would get a faint tone that was repeatable that appeared to be a good target(upper right and approx. 8-9 inches) and I would dig a plug and nothing was underneath it. I checked the plug too and nothing was there. The hole was plenty deep, I was fortunate to get out of a couple of them.HAHA! I used the smartscreen, in manual and sens at 20. Also, it is a pretty trashy area if that matters.
Thanks, Rainman

Probably a good sign... Shows you had to deal with something you never could have imagined. (A machine that sees it all and leaves it up to you to figure out what you just heard..) If it gets to be too much for you try editing out a bunch of the lesser conductive targets until you feel comfortable with it and then go back to get the nickels and jewelry possibilities later... Dig the repeaters and remember what it was that made you dig the mistakes. Then try to eliminate those types of signals.
Good hunting... Guvner..

I assume you were running in factory presets? one thing I suggest is make sure you go to your audio settings and set the variability to max at 10. Probably a better idea to stay out of the high non ferrous trash and hunt a more hunted out site at first...If all your sites are trashy then maybe just accept coins, go to the select screen and only have a check by the coin icon, or even use the edit screen and just open up the top right corner, although I still think the best way to learn it is to run iron mask and listen to how everything sounds, after a while the good tones jump out at you...little tougher to do in fields of pull tabs and trash I know, as the sounds get overwhelming, but after you learn those tones you can go real slow in that trash and listen for those good ones.. If you have a site that has plenty of iron and you have hunted it to death, take the explorer turn on iron mask and go at it...I bet you'll be suprised what you find

I was running in factory presets, audio and variability at 10. And your right I need to move to a different site for now like our old park in town or the boy scout camp I had pretty good luck at. It was just getting to late for me to make the move so I just stuck it out and took my lickin'. I'll try the iron mask, probably at the camp, and see how it goes and save the old schoolhouse till I get the handle of it better. Thanks
Saw your other post and yes..I do need to move the coil less while over the target. Thanks.

I hate discouraging you from using the Smartfind on your first time out but what could be easier than just digging half depth meter 28s in Digital.
I know as well as anyone that we all didn't buy these MACHINES to just hunt in boring Digital and not to play with all the fun settings, but Hey, it's a place to start and before you know it you will be in Smartfind and hunting along with all the big boys using all the fancy screens and settings(>>seriously though, they aren't just fancy they are powerful and they do work. The hunters on this forum are the best).
I didn't listen to anybody when I got my XS (Sorry guys, at that time you were all pushing Edit screens and Learn modes to the newbies??) I knew that if I didn't start off from square one that in the long run I would be missing some of the basics. We'll it paid off I hit my first coin that read -if I was using the meters gauge- 10"s deep, now this was my actual first coin I dug, 40 minutes after slipping the Batt pack in from my house and heading to the park, that includes the time it took to get there. Oh, it turned out to be an 8" Merc, it read 28 in digital. Not a fluke either, I have continued to pull out silver and old coins consistently since that day.
Not just tooting my horn, I'm really trying to illustrate how starting off at a basic setting can many times be a great benefit. Do we all think tiger woods was hitting double eagles the first time he held a golf club(probably ).
I'm just pointing out another direction to take when starting out, to you and any one else interested.
Hey, what ever you do make sure your having fun, I know you will.

Maybe I have the terms mixed up but I thought I was using the basic factory preset screen. When I got a signal I just switched to digital and looked for the 28's. All the 28's I got were nonferrous trash targets. I was listening to ya, just got a bit overwhelmed. By the way, could you list the numbers that correspond to each kind of coin? Do they very with depth? Thanks for the help!

Basic startup should be the Digital screen not smartfind. I felt bad for you when I thought you were struggling trying to figure out where things were in the Smartfind screen, I knew that would be more difficult.
The basic coins are:
Half dollar-- 30
Quarter, Dime, Copper penny-- 28
Zinc penny-- 24 & 25
Nickel-- mostly 6's, but can come in at 4,5,6,and 7.
Don't worry, when you hit a 28 that's showing a half depth meter or deeper, it will be old and it will be loud and repeatable(okay, you might get a clad, but I doubt it.) I passed over several 28's that didn't read at least half a meter before hitting that first Merc, I wanted to be sure it was deep before digging.
By the way, 31's are 99% of the time Iron.
I really like to see early success and too many times I've read where hunters come back posting disappointment in not finding even clad when I knew by what was being told to them was too much and that that would happen.
Really hoping you net a few goodies soon, GL/HH

Mitch, thanks for the numbers, especcially the 31 info. I dug a bunch yesterday. What about large cents?

until I was able to hunt in St. Louis under some 'supervision'.....then...cool.
however..for about the first MONTH I wanted to toss the damn thing into the Lake...AFTER breaking it into 5 pieces. (and burning them)
I find that the depth bar is part of the amazing power of the unit. it DOES make a helluva lot of tones/noise...but if you have your eyeball on the depth...you'll start to reconize the sounds you LIKE..the rest will become background music. (and You'll even start to 'tune' them out using the discrim. screen.
Hang tough..it gets amazing soon.
