Tried a "dig everything" jewelry hunt today...not much luck

Based on all the gold being found here lately, I was inspired, and decided to try a gold ring hunt. I hit a softball field this morning for 3 hours, one where they play co-ed ball. I hunted the outfield -- obviously didn't cover anywhere NEAR all of it, but dug every signal I swung the coil over that sounded good, and had VDI above low 40s. Dug some modern clad, including three nickels (if you get a solid 58 and you aren't in heavy pull tab-type trash, it's a nickel...this machine does love nickels). Also dug a few buttons, bunch of pull tabs and pop tops, lots of small foil, some chain-link fence pieces...but no jewelry. I was confident I'd hit on something; I simply could NOT swing that coil over a gold piece! One of these days... I will say though, yet again, that this machine is SO easy to use, fun to swing, surprisingly deep, and easy to learn what it's telling you. Just an all around great machine.

the gold will show Steve especially if your digging those pesky pull tabs trash tolerance i think this fella calls it, well done getting out there looking for it, its out there just have to put the coil over it hey :) and expect it when you least expect it, only way i can explain it, not sure how it all works but if your looking you will find some every swing puts me closer to the next gold that's my theory :blink:
 
Thanks AJ. I have yet to find a gold piece (a gold-plated ring a few months ago is the closest I've ever come -- though admittedly most of my hunting time is spent cherry-picking old coins, NOT jewelry hunting). Having never found a gold piece, it's hard to keep up the confidence that it's actually out there. I remember feeling this same way about silver coins, back before I found any of those; that seems like a distant memory, but I remember the feeling -- lack of confidence that what you are looking for is actually out there is hard to overcome, as the tendency (for me, anyway, after digging a million pieces of foil and pull tabs) is to abandon the jewelry search, and start cherry-picking the high tones! Still, I keep telling myself that if you want the gold, you gotta keep digging the junk -- it's just frustrating (lack of patience, I guess!) But, in any case, it's ALWAYS fun to be out hunting...

yep Steve couldn't link of a better place to be than out detecting :clapping: maybe try what i do? hunt the high tone silvers with disc up then drop down the disc for 20mins say see what pops up then go back to silvers just to brake it up ? i do understand how you feel i need to be getting some sort of take home item pretty regular or i get a bit um :wacko: so i shift around find a few coins disc down dig a few tabs disc back up dig a few coins ...... just so i don't get :wacko: seems to work for me if in the right place, and try and remember to tell myself the goodies will come if i just keep swingin.

you will find gold its there people lose it :clapping: took me a month to the day after i started to find my 1st gold ring and keep in mind i went every day 3 or 4 hrs a day so it takes some time but i just kept digging the junk :unsure:

if it was easy to find the park would have 30 people in it with detectors :biggrin: its gold its not easy to find but its there!!!

oh i nearly forgot i think its a Chinese thing i put a little piece of gold at the front door it works for me even though its not real gold its a Australian $2 coin but its gold in colour so that's good enough :ausflag: its meant to bring prosperity in my case gold through the door :)
 
You are right, AJ. No way to argue with that. Just wish there was a way to get a few more clues as to whether you have a pull tab or GOLD! I sure as heck don't know any way to tell the difference...they are so similar in size, that "sizing" doesn't help much, and I am guessing they sound identical in tone, too.

yes interesting point not sure i can help with that to much both the rings i found in park where in the 70's so while people say gold is in the tab range its not been my experience low 70's high 70's tabs are long gone but i always look at machine gun targets and any sharp smooth round sounding signals you know the bug the junk sounds long and fuzzy round the edges drawn out and yukky lol imagine what a jagged edge piece of foil or can looks like its ugly and that's what it sounds like ugly only way i can explain it.

i do know my personality if three's not much around i start looking at the ugly sounds just out of frustration and desperation more like it but its still junk :rage: i try and remember the stuff i want has clean edges is same thickness all the way through mostly and so it sounds like it looks, hope i am making some sort of sense its 2.45am so prob not :lmfao:

only thing i can think of is bring the tabs home and spend time waving the coil over them and listen to what the sound like then when you hear them you know its not gold?
 
Yeah, AJ -- you are making sense. I agree there is a "round" sound, especially IMO in poinpoint mode, to a round target. Yes, the junk sounds longer and fuzzier. I totally know what you are describing. But those pull tabs and pop tops sound pretty "small" and "round" to me, and that's what I think makes them tough to distinguish from a ring or other small piece of jewelry. I may spend some time swinging my coil over a few gold rings, and a few different types of pull tabs/pop tops, and see if I can decipher ANY tonal differences at all...but I'm guessing it's gonna be next to impossible. Digging is the only sure way to know...

AJ is right on about the numbers. The first, and unfortunately last gold I found was a 12K pendant with a 10K chain that rang up a solid 70.
I had been finding clad and old pull tabs, but the 70 was a number I had not seen that day. Needless to say, all numbers in that area are dug up now.

Keep at it Steve, you will get one soon, but you need to dig these too .... (see pic) and all the numbers above 59, and above 45. Gold will even come in the silver range at 84.

Oh, and by the way guys..... I'll not be posting in here with my finds for a bit as I wanted to see what all the fuss was with another detector ..... take a peek at the AT Pro forum.
 
whats the pull tab range 55-65? would be small woman's ring yes? i am not sure but seems a lot of gold coming in the seventy's? whats other peoples experience with gold finds? sound then numbers then experience got to cut the odds down of digging junk save the energy :unsure:
 
Welcome to the world of detecting....some guys will hit gold no matter what..some guys can not miss and then there are the rest of us whom dig everything. We have huge piles of trash many zinc's that are unusable and a couple of old coins that have no real value..yet we plug on hoping someday we shall find a nice item....

Not jumped ship as such, just added another detector to see what it can do that the Gold Bug Pro / G2 can not....... also, the AT Pro allows me to hunt when it rains where the Gold Bug Pro / G2 would not.
 
Hey BH -- I DID dig some nickels today! :) Targets were fairly sparse in the ball field (as I had hoped) -- just a bit TOO sparse, I guess, as I didn't find the GOLD! I thought I might have a shot -- since alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the park, and thus not as many pesky pull-tabs as there would otherwise be. But, I found as many nickels as quarters, more nickels than dimes, more nickels than zincolns, and as many nickels as copper memorials. THAT is a first, for me! :) Shows you how much of a high-tone cherry-picker I usually am... :)

I intend to keep hunting for that gold, though...there's gotta be a piece SOMEWHERE in this town... :)

Finally, while I realize that gold can be anywhere from 40-ish on up into the 70s, what in the world piece of gold would hit at 84? Must be a low karat, large piece, no?

small womens ring is gonna read in the foil range, below a nickel or right about at nickel, which is below a pulltab. generally in the pull tab range is where your gonna get mens wedding bands and rings of that size.

Unless Im trying to figure out a new machine, I dig from foil to zinc penny, nothing higher. Ive only found two rings in alot of years hunting that were gold that rang in at zinc penny. There isnt alot of them out there, most are in the foil to nickle range and then comes your pull tab range finds.
silver rings are a different story, they dont take much size to read in the dime/quarter range so you have to take that into account.
to minimize wasted digging I forgo those copper penny and upwards signals. I used to dig it all but find it a real time consuming venture, time that could be spent hunting for gold.
 
Neil -- just to back up the truth of your comments...my 14K wedding band, pretty large band, reads 70 -- below zincolns...and near the top end of where some pop tops read. Meanwhile, I found a very large silver ring recently, men's ring, rang up just like a quarter. Most silver rings I've found read as dimes.

Another thing...NOT all jewelry is in the form of rings -- bracelets, chains, small charms, earrings...many of these gold items will hit farther down, in the foil range, as I understand it. Basically, foil range to zinc range should catch the vast majority of gold...but that's of course a HUGE range, and a range just FILLED with junk. When someone finally figures out how to make a machine that is even a LITTLE bit better than the others at differentiating gold vs. junk, that machine should sell like HOTCAKES...

I can't believe there is not some way a machine could be made which can "read" the DENSITY of an object...even if only a little bit/imperfectly -- as gold is SO much more dense/heavy than ALL the junk that rings in the gold range. Think about it...the most common items that "mimic" gold? Foil and pull tabs/pop tops. The density of a gold piece is SO much different/greater than these flimsy, lightweight items...there's NO WAY for a machine of some sort to "see" this?

best for me if people talk numbers nickles and dimes mean zilch to me :rofl: coins i hunt come in the high 70's so i don't dig anything under 70 unless it grunts nice :clapping: only found 2 gold rings with bug both in the 70's 9k 72-3 18K 78-79 not sure about under that because i don't usually hunt low unless the junk is low too!! or my head is clear and i can with stand the constant chatter that the bug issues :laugh:

sounds good to me BH wet weather detector i know at times i wish i had one for the parks :clapping:
