Tried a T-2 today...

...I thought it was neat. It had a lot of features I didn't really know the details of, as it was my first go at one. I've used detectors of all kinds, in all price ranges and I will say that it was easy to set up with the normal functions. I found it pretty intuitive, in fact. I also liked it's light weight, even if it was sort of spindly. It was like dancing with a skinny woman.

I also find it was 'chattery' at almost any SENS setting, which was irksome. I felt like there was too much going on and possibly I was doing something wrong the whole time, although I knew I was set up properly. It also had a pretty narrow target response and the audio didnt punch through too well. I placed a dime on the ground and thought the response was pretty peckish. I wonder if some quality digiphones might not help

These sorts of reponses were due mostly to the DD coil, Im certain. Unlike the more common concentric coils, this one is different. The coil does cover a lot of ground, which is good, but it balances awkwardly and isnt a concise pinpointer - not so good. My Tesoro CleanSweep coil (also a DD) is a better pinpointer, IMHO. I ended up moving a lot of dirt in order to find even shallow targets and had to really work the center "hot line" to isolate things.

I did notice that it was dead on pulltabs, though. It had no problem ID'ing them. In fact, the ID seems pretty good, although it sure did like to ID things as nickles.

All in all, it was an interesting unit. I suspect one needs to get used to it and give it some time. I wouldn't recommend it to newcomers, even if I would like to work with it a bit more.

Hi David-

I think your honesty with your experience with the T2 is great. Too many people seem to get hung up on brand and bash what they are not using regardless of performance.

I also had some trouble with my first couple of T2 outings. BUT, after learning the machine a little better and thanks to members of this forum, I have become amazed at it's capabilities. (I have to admit at this point, the T2 is the wife's machine and I sneak out with it when I get the chance).

Oh yeah, it can make some chatter! But I have learned that in almost every instance the chatter is giving you a message about the conditions you are hunting in. If you let it talk a little, it will tell you an awful lot about what might be lurking around the good stuff and how to separate it.

I wonder if it would grow on you as it did with me if you gave it another outing or two.

One suggestion, when you pinpoint with it, make sure your coil is touching some ground. You will find it is deadly accurate.

Best of Luck!
Mike

Mike,

I find pinpointing is more effective if you do a couple of detuning operations as you zero in on the target.

How are you handling this month long heat wave? I just can't hunt in this heat.

If the new Fisher is anything like the T2, I would look seriously at it. Mainly because it wil have coil options; my friend, who had the T2, says the T2 only has the one coil.
