Trimmer & Threshold

Question for Mr. Eric Foster or any experienced PI user. If I turn the trimmer up and the threshold down will this help to hear deeper targets or not and what would trade off be ? I am thinking with more volume you could turn threshold down to just faint audio and hear deeper targets. I am using Surf PI Pro.
