Trip to Philadelphia

I responded to a few posts last night so bear me if I repeat some things I already posted. Spent 3 days in Philadelphia. Only saw around 1,000 sites I would love to detect. It rained the whole time I was there. When it did stop for a few minutes I detected at a park around the corner from my Aunt's house. Total detecting time was only 2 3/4 hours. The place was the trashiest site I ever saw. That's the big city for you I guess. Note the lone nickel. I couldn't dig another bit of aluminum can. Here is most of the junk:

Here is my new project. 50 state quarters with a twist. First quarter dug in each state (after I came up with the idea.) It was raining so I ran to the park right before I left for home and found the PA quarter in about 30 seconds. Thankfully. I hit this big school in NJ and it took me an hour to find a quarter. I was detecting an area that was less than 2 months in use so the ground was not well stocked. A friendly custodian directed me to a better place and I found a quarter in about 2 minutes. I headed off to NY and was running out of daylight fast and I was on a toll road. Stopped at a rest stop just before sunset and looked for a quarter. I was fairly close to NYC and got a lot of smart ass comments. Took around 5 minutes to find one. Super trashy as one might expect. I could have done Delaware that day too but it was raining hard at the time and I had no site in mind so it might have taken me an hour to find a park or a school and it was also in the opposite direction I was headed. Here are three quarters dug in three states in one day and the start of my new project. I might ask for some help for Hawaii and Alaska.

Found this brass thing at the NJ High School. Is it a piece of horse tack? If not what is it?

My Aunt never had children and she never stopped spoiling my sisters or me. I fought it for a long time and she ultimately told me that it made her happy to spoil her only nieces and nephew so I share with you the souvenirs she treated me to. When I got there she asked if I wanted to go to the metal detector store or to a coin shop. I said I didn't need anything at either and she said lets check out this new coin shop. I said there was a 50 percent chance I wouldn't be able to deal with the owner. That is what my experience told me. I hate paying too much for coins. I browsed around and saw 3 nice 1938D Walking Libs. I needed one and picked out the one I like best which turned out to be the cheapest. I looked the guy in the eye and said I don't know how to deal with you and that I thought $120.00 was a bit high for the coin. I really thought it was a fair price. I was also pulling British silver coins out of this box that said foreign silver 5% over spot. I found 3 half crowns, a florin, a shilling, and a six pence, all 50 percent silver. I also had picked out 10 bucks in supplies I needed. The owner said how does $125 even sound for it all? I thought that was pretty fair. Some coin guys start out too high and won't budge at all. Went to the US Mint the next day. Place was crowded with kids. Lousy self guided tour. They were making quarters, nickels and cents that day. I still liked it even though you couldn't get too close to the action. I picked up (no I didn't pay for it either) the Silver Eagle as a souvenir. Fab coin. My Aunt asked if there was anything else and I said she had been generous enough but she bought something else so I am expecting something cool from the Mint gift shop as a Christmas present. If you can't tell my Aunt is wonderful, not only because she is so generous, although it is nice to be spoiled by somebody other than myself! We went to a play. Ate at my favorite restaurant, Jack's Firehouse. Ate cheese steaks. Went and saw the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall which are right around the corner from the Mint. I really like that city.

There is my long weekend in a nutshell. You probably didn't need or want all those details, but as you know, that's how I post. Getting really cold up here now. Temp started out at 48 this morning. It has dropped 10 degrees since then and still falling. Supposed to be colder than that all week.

Chris
