Last night, my four girls and the neighbor kids were running and jumping off a one foot high wooden ramp, and seeing who could jump the farthest. The grass was slippery from all the rain, and the kids' feet were sliding out from under them when they hit the ground. I was just ready to stop it, thinking someone was going to get hurt, when Katie my youngest 6 year old, tried to jump off the ramp, but slipped and hit her arm on it. I could tell by the way she was screaming, her arm was broke. Having broke 11 bones myself, I know the pain first hand. Her arm was distorted just above her left wrist. I quickly got a board, put it under her arm, and wrapped it with a torn sheet to keep it immobile. Then my wife and I took her to the hospital. The x-ray revealed both bones broken. One of the bones was broken at a 38 degree angle. A bone specialist had to make a special trip in to reset the bones back in place. It wasn't a fun thing to watch, but he did a good job. The following x-rays showed the bones realigned. She has a soft cast on for this week, and Friday she gets a hard cast after most of the swelling goes down.
We got home from the hospital at 12:30 in the morning. The picture of me and Katie is after I had only had about two hours of sleep.... Obviously she's doing better than I am. Just makes me sick to see my little girl have to go through this.
The picture is one I drew from the x-rays, so the girls could see how Katie's arm was broken.
