jimmy1980: The F-5 is a very good detector, that will do a few things that no other detector that I know of will do, it is one of my favorites, for parks yards and tot lots. The problem with it is it has a steep learning curve, 400-600 hrs for many people to truly understand what it is capable of doing. Problem # 2, first detector, new hunter, as you become more experienced you will learn many things about the ground, the difference between wet and dry soil, and how it affects your detector, minerals in the soil, several targets under your coil, deep large iron, deep aluminum cans, rust spots that disappear when dug, just to name a few, with time and patience you will, usually understand what your detector is telling you and help you decide whether to dig or not. It also sounds like you are in a coal Bering area, both the coal and clinkers are nearly impossible to hunt, I was in coal areas in your state about seven yrs ago with four high dollar machines, Minelab, whites, Garrett, and Fisher, very difficult for any of them. If you have playgrounds with wood chips or sand, not over coal areas, they should speed up your learning curve on the F-5, pay attention to Mike Hillis he is the expert on this machine. Jimmy I can tell by your posts that you are learning, wish I was close enough to help you, time and patience will pay off big (if you do not introduce the detector to a tree first). The F-5 is very good at finding Gold jewelry, and silver coins when you have learned the machine, and get your coil over it, keep at it your getting there. HH and good luck Steve

yea slowly but shurely, I did notice one thing on pinpointing with the eliptical coil anyway, when u find yoeur target press pin point get highest tone in center as mike said with golf ball, then let off pin point press again while on target move back off it when u go back forwards and get the signal its rigth there under the point in the toe of 10 inch coil. dead on every time. im hopen to get out later on today after i get off work couldnt go out yesterday it was snowin really sucked. almost as bad as old lady sayin i wasnt gettin none. im gettn addicted to this new hobby. anyone ever try huntin the sides of railroads? gave it a shot the other day but ended up goin nuts kinda got it figured out a little better now thogh just wondern if it woud be possibe to hunt railroad sides. not near the main track about 4 ft from that down a bankment. thier is some coal thier from the cars spillin it. in gettysburg area so not really coal area unless im missin what youer tellin me.

well i just got back from my first sucessfull hunt actualy found musket ball. i am wondern about the signals though, mike has stated to only dig signals that hit both directions what about the only one signal in one direction? are they just deeper targets or what? thanks guys for all youer help learnin this new hobby and beast of a machine. dont think im gonna wrap it around a treee anytime soon found some more stinkin lincons again. one day i might get this thing payed off. perhaps few more musket balls. if thier worth anything
