I placed a rusty roofing task on a 3 tall inch piece of concrete with a silver dime on the ground about 4 inches away. With the sensitivity set at 14, the dime couldn't be picked up no matter what speed the coil was swung.Higher sensitivity did not help. Trash density setting and discrimination had no effect on this. Raising the coil about 8 inches gave a short clipped response that would not repeat. With the sensitivity set to auto both targets could be read. I think Auto Sensitivity will be my choice in trash from now on!

Yes I would say that when you switched to auto the detector lowered the sensitivity a lot because of the rusty iron it sensed,this prevented the iorn swamping the sensor with a huge signal which would mask the coin signal,lowering the sensitivity is vital in high iorn and mineralisation if you want to detect the fainter non ferrous signals.
With the Quattro it is also vital to use all metal mode and move the coil very slowly,this will give you the best chance of letting the non ferrous signals come through.

Have you tried lifting the coil in manual sensitivity to about 9 or 10? I wouldn't under estimate manual sensitivity, because you have more control over detecting for targets in a varied type of ground, than you do with auto. I don't feel auto makes all the necessary adjusts all the time, and using the manual will help you to understand the detector a little better, as to setting it according to the type of ground you are detecting in. There are so many variations in soil conditions, wet/dry ground, compact or loose soil, sand or black/red/brown dirt, heavy and light trash. Using the manaul, you learn what the detector will read and tell you, rather than relying too much on auto. Auto has it's place, but I much prefer to use manual. I've had better sucess with it.
I'm going to try the different audio modes next. What surprised me is how much how much more the coin was masked when the nail is closer to the coil and the coin farther away. It appears, coins laying below the trash are a lot harder to get than those laying above it no matter what depth the targets are.

I think we need to investigate this more. That concerns me, because I always thought the Quatro could decern the difference, but now I'm not sure. Very interesting.
