Tryin to get used to the CZ3D

First time out with the CZ3dand all I did was dig iron. I was wondering where I was going wrong. There were a lot of tones coming from it and the meter was staying on coins . Is there a problem? Please help.

Set the sensitivity on the preset mark for a starting point, set the discriminator on 0 and test some coins with an air test. Get a small iron nail, not a galvanized one, and test that. Get some tabs or foil and test those. Make sure you are hearing the different tones and getting ID's that represent the targets.

If you can get reasonable results from air tests, then move to hunting with it. If it is working, you should be able to follow the manual and get some air tests that match iron, foil and coin targets and get set up for detecting targets in the ground.

When you say there were lots of tones, the meter says coin and you dig iron, my first two thoughts are 1) sensitivity too high and 2) maybe too many targets under the coil at once, do you have the 10 inch coil, 8 inch coil, 5 inch coil?

Please read the manual if you haven't already, set up some tests on some targets, and let us know how that works.

Make sure you run in "0" discrimination so you can hear the iron "grunts" with the high tone. For the most part...if you hear the grunt...it is probably iron. It sure helped me cut down on my iron digging. Also...iron usually doesn't pinpoint in the same spot you got the original signal. The CZ3D is a deep seeking unit...one of the best.

I do have the 8 in coil. My sens. was up to 5 and disc was at 4. I see now where you have to keep them all at a low setting in a trashy park. This CZ is a 1021 model and I want to learn all I can from it.

Be aware of coil sweep speed. Iron, more so bigger pieces than very small pieces will bounce into a high tone coin. When you get a high tone, slow the coil speed down over the target and see if a slow sweep speed drops the target to all low tone. I tend to dig bouncing tones, but only when they bounce with a slow coil speed. The bounce is why I think it is important to listen to all tones (disc 0) and not just listen for high tone (high disc setting).

Thanks for the advise folks. I'll give it a go next time out but in a different park less trashed and see if I can get used to those high and low tones along with keeping the settings low as well.

Find a good sounding target repeatable. Circle it & listen. If it stutters its deep iron. Good targets don't stutter. I hope it helps. These machines love iron. But you can cut down on digging it by circling around it.

On the cz be careful deep targets 6-8 inches frequently are piped or iron they false and show up as coins. Also on another note the cz doesn't like coins a inch down and will skip and not read the target. The 3d is also amazing at finding nickels. It's one of the few machines that can tell pulltab and nickels apart.
