Trying to re-learn the Etrac-some help please

I had an Etrac for a short while several years ago and never really tried to learn it. This time I will make a big effort. So if you folks could give me a few pointers..........
The first question is on sounds vs display. I notice that while swinging on a two different targets that are a few inches apart, if I go from one to the other the sounds will change but the numbers
stay the same unless I raise the coil and let the threshold come back then the display will give me the last reading. If I am in TTF mode then it seems the machine is useless if I am picking up different targets above the "17" line as they all sound the same and the numbers don't change. Is there some setting that will help this?

My second question-When my Etrac is first turned on and before acquiring any signal there is a dark bar across the screen that reads "FE CO" Once a signal is found the screen changes to read the numbers. What I have noticed that even when making small sweeps across the target and getting a good repeatable signal, the screen may switch back to the bar that reads FE CO. It stays that way until I raise the coil again and let the threshold come back, Is this normal?

Thanks guys

MXT, I just sent my Etrac in for the exact same thing except my numbers would be gone for up to a minute and it didn't matter what I did to the machine,(raise the coil, move to different targets, etc)and all my settings were right.
I hope yours doesn't get that bad.I should get mine back next week.
