Tumbler Advice (Clad Hunt)

I woke up to find that my tumbler had stopped some time during the night. I tried to shake out the broken rubber band and there wasn't one. Turns out the rubber band had slipped off the small pulley. I started her up again and in about 10 minutes it happened again. I slid the small pulley to be more in line with the large one and all seemed well. I went out for a hunt. Got 84 coins to bring my yearly total to 6001 coins. Nothing else except sunburn on my neck which there seems to be a lot of around here. When I got home to tumbler had stopped again. I put myself into John in West Virginia (or Khouse) mode and took the thing apart to figure out what was wrong. Jammed in between the motor and the casing was the piece of the small pulley that had worn away. There was also about a quarter cup of rubber band debris. Went down to the local Mom & Pop hardware store and for the first time in my life they didn't have what I wanted. I bought a couple of nylon washers and some good plastic crazy glue and improvised by rebuilding the pulley that was attached to the fan. It has been spinning away for about 2 hours now. I am way behind on my tumbling. I have been finding about 1000 coins every 3 weeks and if I don't tumble one batch every weekend it really piles up. I wish I had a bank that would allow me to practice the Awhitster method. Don't want to rock the boat where I bank now. The tellers actually save silver coins for me. I do about whatever they ask.

Keep an eye on your tumbler. Keep the pulleys in line. Keep it cleaned out. Keep it lubricated. I bet if I had checked the alignment of the pulleys more often this wouldn't have happened.

No pics of my boring old clad. Hopefully one of you guys will come up with the goods today.

Model 3A that I've had for over 20 years. I've taken it apart just once to clean the pulleys and band, it has never stopped and keeps on ticking. The day it gives out, I will buy another Lortone, simply the best. HH John

Maybe when this one needs replacing I'll try a more expensive name brand one like a Lortone but hard to beat this one. Cost me 20 bucks and 7 shipping. Then 89 cents for a sack of rubber bands and now 29 cents for two nylon washers. If I ever do have to get another one I'll buy the biggest one they make.

Chris

I just looked on eBay. The price on those 3A's came down a bit.

Yeah with rubber bands it's crucial to keep the pulleys lined up or the band disintegrates in nothing flat.

I have one also that I've had for years but mostly use the Harbor Freight model. Got the Lortone for 45 bucks and the HF for $19.95.
