Ugly nickels w/ semi pleasing results

We went out to central Oregon about 2 months ago where we detected a park that's had good results in the past. Silver, buffalo, old non-precious metal jewelry...etc. On this trip, I managed to recover 2 wheaties and 5 v-nickels. Unfortunately no silver, but still happy with the older stuff. Take a look below at what some of the targets looked like before, then after my wife cleaned them. I new for sure that these would be virtually junk when I saw them, but after like 2 months of the wife using navel jelly to clean the nickels, I am happy with the results.

What, if any, other techniques to you guys suggest when it comes to cleaning cruddy nickels?

By the way, I've never posted here in this forum, but my name is Chris. My wife, Aundrea, and I live in the Portland, OR area. I'm sure I'll be able to learn a lot from you guys here.

That's some amazing work by your wife, Chris. What a fine job! And nice job on your part, also. Five nickels in one hunt would be a record for me, as there are so many junk mid-tones in most places I hunt that I usually ingore them, and listen specifically for silver!

Nice job, and welcome!

Steve

Thanks Steve! The 5 nickels came in 2 days time. 3 the first and 2 the second.

:beers:Welcome Chris & Nice old nickels. Navel jelly works pretty well. I'll try it next time. I've been soaking mine in ketchup & it works well also. GL & HH

[size=large]welcome to the forum. can i assume you were part of the group hunt organized by Monte Berry a couple of months ago?
haven't heard anything about the results of that hunt.
nice finds.

Yep, that was us. I think I was the only one who got anything. We went into Kent and a couple relics were found, but thats it. Then a couple guys went into Grass valley where they were run off by the mayor who didn't want any metal detecting in the park. I think one of those guys got something there before they got kicked out, but once again I'm not sure about that.

We practically live next to Monte so he's been a huge part of our detecting life.

Maybe someone should have reminded the "mayor" that his/her job is essentially a joke. And that he/she should provide some proof that detecting is not allowed. Otherwise I would have told him/her to move along ..

Anyways .... never tried the ketchup method. Will have to try it ... thanks.

Being mayor of a town that has a population of what, 100, is a joke!? NO! :p

I live in a town of 600, and I went to the mayor directly and sought permission to hunt city property. Not only did he give me permission, but he also directed me to a killer old bottle dump behind his own house. So, out of respect to him, not all mayors are idiots. Just the ones who think they are more important than they really are.
