Yesterday will go down in history as being one of the most successful hunts I've ever had on public ground - I'm still having trouble believing it!
Started out detecting in a familiar area of the park, using a deep relic program with the Deus that basically turns it into a Beep-and-Dig machine that will pull coins from 9-10" deep...in badly mineralized ground.
First coin was a sharp 1926 S Mercury dime, it turns out that this is a fairly rare date. Mike and I have had great luck with early Mercury dimes found that are VF or better condition - he still has the trophy from last year...a 1921 D Mercury dime in XF condition!
Went on to find two Indian cents, dated 1893 and 1895 - both coins still show full lettering and sharp details. These coins were one foot from each other at the 8-9" mark. We took a break from digging trash after a while, got a bite to eat, and then went back at it.
I decided to search an area of the park that I've never touched before - which turned out to be the right decision! First coin after the break was a 7-inch-deep 1941 Mercury dime, two feet away out came a 1916 S Wheat at about 8". Two steps away I got a "silvery" signal on the Deus, while running 4kHz; and pulled two Mercury dimes from the same hole from the 8" mark. I was very excited at this point...filled the hole, and then took one swing to the right to get a large, steady hit indicating "85-86" - still running 4kHz.
Mike came over and checked the signal with his Fisher Coinstrike - a 20-year old obscure detector that IDs coins as good as a CTX even at 9" deep, and much better than the Deus at depth. It was reading "half dollar" solidly, with a little wavering, while the Deus IDed the target as a "solid quarter signal...maybe silver"
Got down to the target and I brushed away a little dirt to see a large silver rim! First thought was a Standing Liberty quarter, brushed away more dirt to see it was definitely NOT a quarter. Had to run to the car to get the root saw, and seconds later I was staring at my first Barber Half EVER found, an 1893 O variety! Quite possibly my best coin find....to date!
