Unstable in Semi-auto; Stable in Manual ???

go-rebels

New member
I duplicated a test I performed a few days ago running my EXII in semi-auto over my test bed in my backyard. In default semi-auto=20 my unit goes unstable until I drop the auto-sens to10. Then, of course, my deep silver targets disappear. If I run in MANUAL set at 19-21, then I'm stable and getting deep detection.

I do have an EMI problem as I near my house that virtually renders my EXII useless. During this test I'm about 60' away and didn't think (!) I had an EMI problem. I'm in the country and have no power lines nearby. Oddly, my Fisher F75 works fine with a small drop in sensitivity as I near the house.

Has anyone else ever experienced this stability problem in semi-auto?

I had some instability awhile back. Not exactly like yours and thought it was dirt under the coil. It seemed i coul hunt until the batteries got midway then semi was affected more than manual by EMI. What i ended up doing ... and it eliminated the problem was cleaned my connections, especially the one on the uppershaft going to the box. I do have one area in a park that gives semi a fit but i can hunt at a reduced sensitivity in manual and it seems less affected by the EMI.

Have you tried turning it off and on? I've seen this on occasion, on my XS where it will run ok at a manual setting but be batty in semi, but rarely. Usually the auto wil detune way below the setting number if EMI is present. I've always been able to fix it by cycleing power.

I'm not using a coil cover as I'm hunting over grass. I only use the cover if I'm in cinder or rock, which is rare.

Now thats starting to sound like the problem i had. It also helped briefly when i RESET to factory settings and re entered my settings. Id check that upper coil connection.

I disconnected and reconnected the coil wire connection and now all is fine.

???

Susceptibility to the EMI around my house has been reduced too.

interesting post and good reading. I have not experienced what you did.
