I just looked it up in the Audubon book and it is a Sharp-shinned Hawk and it does winter in the southern states including Arizona.

great pic Steve, we regularly watch the hawks feed on the local finches here in Idaho being more rural nature is a part of everyday life. Not uncommon to have fox coyote deer badger etc. around the house. Chris

better in your yard than ours. Our birds would freak out if they saw it or heard its shrill.

Same here. We live in a very rural and mountainous area. Not only is it common; we expect to see deer, turkey, coyote, wolves, rabbits, skunks, hawks, snakes (my daughter has been bitten twice), bobcats............. etc................ almost anytime we are out. My house is almost 1/2 mile off the main road (the only house back here), and we have an abundance of wildlife. Rare, but we occasionally even see bald eagles or a black bear. It's COOL!

a deer that was hit on our little interstate spur that goes through Springfield. Right in the middle of town. It would have had to go through about 3 miles of neighborhoods to make it to where it was hit. It was a spike. Should have been in someones freezer by now!
