Upgrade question

Hi,
I'm considering trading an older MXT for a newer ATP. The gentleman says he bought his ATP in "June or July of 2011" and he doesn't know anything about an upgrade. He has also posted comments (on another forum) about having trouble "hearing the tones" due to hearing problems, as well as frustrations about understanding the tones. The pix he has sent don't show any sort of cam lock, just the silver push-buttons, but the machine is immaculate. He says that he's only put 10 hours on the thing, and I believe him due to his standing and history. Do I need to worry? I really want to try an ATP. Any advice would be appreciated.
Ray

Did he register it? My understanding is that the older ATP's didn't have cam locks and there was some sort of software update given them, if you had a problem and sent it in.. I think if you search the form you can find more info.

As far as being able to hear it, wasn't the machine. I wear the headphones ad have to keep it turned down to half or it hurts. The tones in Pro Mode are different than Standard. Instead of three separate tones there is combinations of all three according to what you are detecting. If using Pro Zero you can hear a coin and a coin at the same time. In standard it would be one or the other or both alternately.

If you watch the Garrett videos on youtube you can see and hear them for yourself.

Get the serial number and call Garrett. They will be able to tell you if it had the upgrades. 1 800 527 4011 IF he has trouble hearing the tones on the AT and has a hearing problem, then the problem belongs to him, not the machine. It takes time to learn the tones, you just don't get them figured out after 10 minutes. Call Garrett, and if it checks out good at a decent price, buy it, otherwise, consider buying a new one or the classifieds for a more recent model.

HMMMM-- I've never seen an atp with silver pushbuttons, the control buttons on mine are grey. There should be a serial # on the body between the coil cable connector and the body. Get that #, call garrett and confirm the warrenty is good. Garrett has a 2 year warrentee that is transferable.

Thanks for the help, gentlemen.
I didn't think the warranty was transferable. At least that's what their website says.
Ralph, the silver buttons I referred to are the ones on the rod that you push in to adjust the length.
I'll call Garrett and see what they can tell me.
