Every Summer our complete family all get together either at the beach or further north in the mountains. The highlight of the week for all the grand kids is the Pirate Treasure Hunt. The kids use a White's PRIZM or CoinMaster metal detector to find clues leading to where the Pirate's Treasure Chest is buried.
The adults make up rhyming clues and place each clue into a small zip lock bag along with a coin or token. We bury the clues in a sequence that runs the kids all over the place. When the grand kids get to the area where the clue is supposed to be hidden, they take turns using the metal detector to locate the clue.
The kids are read the first clue the night before the hunt so they can think about where the first buried clue might be found the next morning when the sun comes up.
Eventually the kids find all the clues and dig up the Pirate's Treasure Chest which is full of USA silver coins. The kids also love dividing up the treasure. This approximately 1 1/2 hours is in their memory forever!
