Yesterday I took my new/used Excal out for a spin!

Wading in waist deep salt water!

The control was never more than a foot under water.

I had great fun until I started getting loud, almost explosive, sounds in my earphones!

Upon investigating I found about a table spoon full of water in the control housing!!

There are no obvious indications of damage, IE cracks or chips etc.

Have any of you had a similar experience and how did you deal with it?

No CJ, mine have never leaked a drop. It may be a good idea to go ahead and send the unit on into Minelab and have it checked out thoroughly anyway, since you bought it used. They will check everything over and pressure check the unit. It should be good as new. That water has to be dried out, as corrosion will begin to form immediately. I'd send it in.

Thanks for your observations Friend.

As a plumber with over 35 years experience fixing leaks, I have had a lot of success with this sort of thing.

I have the circuit board removed from the housing and determined that the leak is from the Descrimination knob shaft boss.

It is a plastic tube glued into the housing wall and I think the glue joint is bad!

The electronics have not been submerged except where the two wires connect at the lower end of the CB.

I have messed with this sort of thing too as a pump repairman and was able to clean and seal the connections to prevent future problems.

All the "O" rings are OK and there are no obvious leaks related to them after I cleaned and re-siliconed all mating surfaces!

The circuitry opperates as designed now and if I can just get rid of the blasted leak it'll be good to go!

The leak seemes to be from a bad glue joint that I descovered by pressure-testing the housing.

I used a good old hardware store Duro glue to seal inside and out and now there seems to be no leak!

I'll have to reassemble the machine and test again, but I think that's all it was---a bad glue joint!

I just finished assembling the machine and placed it a foot under water and no leaks!!!

It sounds great and I can't wait to take it out for a spin!!

I'll monitor it closely for a while, but don't expect any more problems.

It was suggested I send the Excal to the repair depot, but I couldn't without trying my best to deal with the problem.

It's always a pleasure to overcome obstacles and if I'm successful I not only learn more about my machine, but I don't have to wait for someone else to do what I can do for myself!!!!!

Well, you sound like a man on a mission CJ, LOL! I have no skills fiddling with things of that nature and want no part of it. I like to detect, not work on equipment. I'm glad you got squared up and hope it works, sounds like you got it though. Keep us posted.
