compass 77 ... you bet ! i always use my ads7 ... the analog controls are the difference. i have a new digital detector... its not bad but lacks the depth&discrim compared to my dinosaur.

Got in a little late on this post, but I know what you mean about needing a machine that discriminates well up on the dry sand. That Infinium is super out in the surf, but I always use my GTI 2500 up on the dry sand. The Ace 250 is great. That's what my wife uses. Yep, you can notch out those nails or use another one of the discrimination modes. Best machine for the money. Very user friendly
have fun!Have a CZ 21 absolutely will ignor rusty nails ,bobby pins, you can tell with a little practice most tabs and foil. found over 16 gold rings in 4 months of detecting,thats was my first year detecting, heres the bad news, unit broke 3 times in less tha 1 yr.imagine how much I might of found if it wasnt down for 3 months. Now its on to the tiger shark that i ordered 2 months ago, there out of production. Oh my. Heres a side bar, I did find a 14 ct. gold ring quarter ct. diamond laying in about 3 inches of water while cleaning out beer cans.no detector. sometmes the eye is the best detector of all

Find an old Sovereign XS or Excal they will be a great beach machine until the day hell freezes over.
Fitted with a 10 inch all terrain coil and a 15 ins WOT coil plus the digital meter (not the bar graph one) you will have all beach detecting bases covered with the XS.
The meter gives a negative reading plus you will hear a low tone on iron. It will track from the water to the wet sand, to the dry sand,
to the black sand with hardly a murmer. The 15 inch WOT coil goes bloody deep and has good sensitivity to small coins and rings but is touchy on elec interferance, as are all large coils.
The only time I will give up my XS will be the day I depart this world.

I'd get the 250. I think just having the pinpoint mode alone is worth
the extra price. But it also has finer discrimination notches too.
In theory, the depth should be about the same for either one.
But you'll find objects quicker with the 250 with the pinpoint mode.
You can get semi close using the ID mode, ala the 150, but it's
hard to get real close like you can the 250. Many targets I pinpoint,
I can stab in place with my probe.
BTW, it's easy to notch non rusty nails with the 250. But it gets
tricky with rusty nails as they bounce from high to low. The
machine sees the low conductivity of the iron, but also the much
higher conductivity of the rust coating, and will cause it to hit
low and high. If enough rust, it'll bang fairly solid in the coin range.
But if you see any quiver in the ID, that's a tip off it could be rusty
iron. Coins will not change ID as a rule. They will be pretty solid
in the same notch every time.
So it's going to be hard to avoid every single nail unless you want
to risk losing a goodie.. But with practice, you can get to know how
most nails act, and tell them from coins. But even then, I still usually
dig.. I don't want to miss the possible small relic, hot wheels car, etc.. :/
Also, every nail I pull out of the ground is one less to bother me next
time.

I too bought a White's 6000Di way back in 1985 and loved that thing albeit very heavy compared to today's machines.
It finally died and it's replacement was the Ace 250.
I quoted awhile back that if I still had the White's and the 250 and could keep only one, I'd choose the 250.
The new computer controlled Md's apparently don't loose any depth when you notch out nails. The notch just prevents the MD
from "sounding off" on them. It still does detect them, as you can tell by looking at the display when it passes over nails.
Nails can hide good targets with any detector. That will ALWAYS be the nature of the beast.
Also, asking about the best MD is like asking what car is the best - Ford or Chevy. You'll always get different opinions.
