:usaflag: White's Surf Dual Field Volume Control!!

FYI-- Fellow Hunters from the moment I placed the Dual Field's earphones on and turned on the machine I was uncomfortable with the volume being too high for me. I had toned down Garrett's too loud earphones by placing rubber gasket material in the ear cups to mute somewhat the volume and that made the ear cups uncomfortable on the DF, but at least I could use the machine.

Recently I got a bit of info that isn't generally known about an adjustment that should solve the problem.

There is a screw slot electrical pot inside the battery/electronics compartment that someone posted about a while back.

The person said it is a volume adjustment, but I don't know.

I called my dealer and every contact number for White's dealers in my area and no-one knew about the adjustments purpose.

I would have called the factory, but they didn't open until 12 oclock local time, 8AM Pacific Time.

My dealer told me he would call and let me know. (I'm not one to risk damaging my detector without knowing what I'm doing!)

(Later-------------)

My local dealer was a little slow getting back to me, so I called White's Service Dept in Oregon and the tech there told me that the pot was for volume control.

Using a small screwdriver gently tweak the adjusting screw counter-clockwise to lower volume and clock-wise to increase.

Now I can get rid of those rubber disks that have worked well, but been so uncomfortable.

I prefer to have threshold at just steady (it does wobble a little) with volume at a comfortable setting.

My threshold knob is usually at a tiny bit before 12 Oclock. (I suspect each machine may be a little bit different.)

Now I'll have to play with the settings a little to get the volume I want at the threshold setting I prefer.

Word of caution, Make certain the O ring seal is clean and lightly lubricated (I carefully wipe off excess with a clean, dry cloth) with silicone grease before re-installing it and that all mating surfaces are dry and clean. Also, go easy with the screwdriver as these tiny devices are delicate and must never be forced!

GL&HH Friends,

Thanks I wish I had known this before.... It was way to loud for me when I first got it.... It seems to be just right now. I guess I have lost that bit of hearing, or my batteries have gotten old.

A Friend that uses the Dual Field assures me that lubricating the seal will cause leaking and as I know he is a DF user with loads of experience I shall follow his lead and remove the lube from my machine and keep a weather eye on it!

Thanks Craig,

CJ

This AM is rainy and with no chance for a comfortable hunt I decided to see if I could re-set the volume of my DF.

I removed the gasket material I had placed in the ear cups and turned on the DF.

I found that tweaking the screw adjustment counter-clockwise increased the volume contrary to what I had been told by the tech.

After a few moments of adjusting the threshold/volume I finally am satisfied with the sound quality and response.

I can now stand the threshold at a bit higher setting and the slightly muted signal is more easy to listen to.

A water hunt in the near future should confirm that my DF is now a lot more comfortable for me to use.

I expect to better hear the signal response hopefully leading to more recoveries.

I'll let you know if my efforts have made a positive difference sometime in the future,

CJ
