Using groundgrab on Omega 8000...

Looking for some help gb'ing my Omega 8000. Do you use groundgrab straight from the disc hunting mode?? I'm a little confused and the manual isn't helping me much. I only have a handful of hours on the O8K but like it a lot. Bob.

Bob to use the ground grab function you need to switch to AT mode. When done over a clean metal free area ground grab gives a precise neutral ground balance that carries over to the disc mode.

it's hard for me to believe how much the ground can change in this one old yard in town I'm hunting!! It goes from being balanced to one bar up to 3 bars down and back and forth. It's right on main street with all of the accompanying traffic and poles and direct tv dishes etc... That's got to affect my detector and it's depth and stability, right??
I think the Omega would be a killer relic hunter. I was going for one last signal yesterday and got a nice high tone that wouldn't pinpoint right(or small) so I knew it wasn't a coin. It took a good 15 minutes, but out of the ratty front yard of a 115 year old house came what looks like a piece of grill from a heater vent. Rusty and heavy, about 10 inches long by 5 inches wide by an inch thick. Great signal, almost up to my elbow deep. Out in the sticks or battlefield it could have been a cannonball I guess. I really like the Omega. It's a keeper. HH. Bob.

Bob in old trashy yards iron will show up as a reading on the Fe meter. Ground error bars jumping back and forth can caused by ground contamination from burnt coal and the like. The only way to reliably find out that you need to re-ground balance is to switch to all metal and re-check over clean ground.

Sound like one heck of a site you got there!

Bob,

Are you bobbing (pardon the pun) the coil up and down while you are watching the ground phase readout. The meter is only accurate when you bob the coil up and down just like you do when you ground balance the machine. The next time you are hunting and want to check the see if the Omega is still ground balanced, just stop and bob the coil up and down and watch the readout. My guess is that all the bars will disappear and you will find that the Omega is still ground balanced. If you watch the meter while you are sweeping the coil it will appear that the ground has changed; however, if you stop and bob the coil up and down you will find that in most cases the detector is still balanced. Try it and let us know what you discover.

Thanks,
Leo

I'll give it a shot next time I'm out. Our ground isn't that hot so it must be cinders, ash, etc...that causes it to fluctuate. Bob.
