Using the 10 1/2" coil for the first time

After using the CS for about 30 hours with the 8"
coil and feeling fairly comfortable with it I have
decided to try the 10 1/2" coil this weekend.
I am working a football field now with very few
targets, good or bad, so this should be a good
place to try it without getting in trouble. Got
a big surprise when I air tested it and got a nickel
at 12" with a really nice signal. Inside with all
the electrical gizmos and all. To hit a nickel that
strong in discrim I was impressed. Or amazed
was more like it. Don't put much stock in air tests
but this was something that I didn't expect.
I run at 900 and put up with a little falsing but I do dig deep.
Can't wait to see what the big coil is going to
show me. Any secrets to pinpointing with the big
coil ? Will report back on Monday on how I like
the big coil unless I am still digging

at first with that solid eliptical "foot" rather than the open hole of the 8". I had a hard time with it, but now it's no problem at all. One little trick I still do is raising big coils up off the ground. That lessens the signal strength and helps me quickly get a good pinpoint (& sometimes see the ground area below as well). Your right, though alot heavier, to me it's worth the added depth & also the ground coverage of analyzing like 7 more gallons of soil or something crazy (if I read NASA Tom's intelligence right) Seemed to help me do pretty well in those HUGE England fields......

Bill,
Where is the pinpoint center on the 10.5" coil? Is it hidden from view underneath the solid part of the elliptical receive coil or is it just above the U-shaped cutout in the elliptical coil?
Lastly, what method works best for you when pinpointing with this coil, crossing the target in an X pattern or something else?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Keith

I appreciate your help as I realize that this will
be a little different than handling the 8" coil.
The size of the area I have to hunt and the lack of
a lot of targets led me to try the big coil. Like
you said huge fields equals the big coil. I am
sure I am going to have fun with it.

@ one of my 10.5 coils to see the exact spot. I think It may be about where the stem connectors are, but I'd like to have one in front of me to be sure. I guess once to get the hang of it you don't really focus on the coil spot as much anymore...it becomes 2nd nature. BUt, yes, I'd say a big help is to either X the target & or raise the coil up some as I said above....

I'm holding a 10.5" coil right now & I'd say the center is just in front of where the stem screws in.
I've seen some people put a white dot on there's around that spot even, but as I said it becomes second nature after a couple times out...HH, Bill
