V and a little Gold

Weather finally cleared of the snow wind and rain today so managed to get to an old beat to death park today. Pulled an 1888 V Nickel, extremely worn and pitted from the wet ground and managed a huge gold earring. Wife won't wear it too large she says and it's only one. Also managed a single clad quarter along with 2 clad dimes and 3 nickels. Finished the day with 105 memorial pennies. Got tired of pennies after 5 hrs. At least I got out for awhile which is good. It is stamped 14 KT so thata always helps
 
Nice ear ring, funny thing about wives they don't seem interested in wearing just one ear ring, and like you, that's how I find most of mine just singles, however last time on a beach in Hobart I found two pairs of ear rings one set gold and the other silver, a different reaction from the Wife then as they ended up in her jewelery box.
Anyway you have a couple of nice finds and it sounds like spring is in the air over there.

Actually she said it was to large and would make her top heavy. Probably just as good I only found one, I think in all the years gone by hunting I have only found one complete set. I don't understand how you could lose something that large and not notice it gone from your ear or at least feel it going, especially pierced ones like this.
 
Nice piece of gold and too bad about that v-nickel. That has to be one of the worse v's that I have seen before. You must have some bad ground where you are at. The nickels I find up here are not that bad, occasionally I will find one that is pitted but not like yours. At least it wasn't a key date and It is still a keeper in my book. Good luck and HH>
 
Thanks James but actually it varies in this particular park. I have some that come out rusty looking but clean up beautiful and others like this come out nasty looking. This make 2 in a row bad, and both from the 1880's. This being an extremely wet year doesn't help either.
 
WTG jb!!! I know what you mean about the V nickles coming out of the ground in certain spots that look like crap. See you tomorrow.....:)

They do look pretty bad don't they. This one is is so bad it can't even be slightly cleaned or everything will totally be gone from it.
 
I have learned the hard way to not try and clean V's and buff's. You could see a date before and then after trying to make it look nicer the date disappeared!!............:)

If you have nickels that you have cleaned and the date and mint marks have disappeared, go out to your local coin shop and see if the have what is called Nic-a-date. It is an acid that you can put over the mint mark and the date area of the coin to bring them back. It comes in a small bottle and up here it cost something like $5.00 or so. How the acid works is that it eats away the surface around the mint mark and the date due to this area being softer metal than the date and mint mark. The design of the coin and everything else is compacted a lot harder than the background surface of the coin and this is why it eats away at the background. The coins are already shot and this isn't going to hurt the coin anyways so give it a try.
 
I may have to try another town for a coin dealer the one here doesn't have anything but coins period. Sounds as if I need to try it and see as the coins are worthless anyway and a date always makes me feel good. Thanks for the tip James
 
When you try this on the coin, it will take a few times for it to work. It has to eat the black and other impurities off of the surface first. When the acid turns black on the coin, just wipe it off with a rag and if not visible yet, add more acid to area until date or mint mark is visible. Good luck.
