V-nickles and possible key buffalo

moose

New member
Wednesday I hunted my old park for about 2hrs and came across a deep 11-14, 11-15 and an occasional 12-14,15. After 7 1/2" I finally pulled out a 1911 V-nickle and was proud as a peacock as I figured the park was clean. After admiring my V, I checked the hole again and received another sweet tone @ 12-15 and out popped a 1918 buffalo. I didn't realize it's date until I got home and dabbed it with water. I know that folks have asked several times " what do we clean nickles with? " and now that I have a 1918 buffalo with an 8 that appears to be flat on the top of the 8, I will now pay attention to any advice on cleaning Nickles.
The reason I say this, is that it appears to be an 8 over 7. It is loaded with crud and I don't want to damage it. The mint mark isn't visible and I would like to clean it properly.

Any help would be AWESOME !!!!!! Will post pic's after cleaning. Also managed 2 Merc's as well with this hunt.

Thanks,
Moose

moose,

Congratulations on those great finds. I've had great success cleaning all my silver coins
with electrolysis. You want to be sure to check the coin every 30 seconds to be sure
that you won't damage the coin's surface.
It's the fastest and safest way, personally speaking, of cleaning the coin.
I'm sure there are many other ways of doing this cleaning, but they will take more time.

Thank you Reltobert,

Unfortunately I don't know what electrolysis is and or how it is performed. These are nickles, is this the same procedure that you would perform on silver ?

Thank you,
Moose

Yes, but with nickels you have to be extra careful with your time using Electrolysis. I have had success
with nickels. If you look on the web under 'Electrolysis-Cleaning coins' you will find simple directions
on using Electrolysis and how to put it together very cheaply.

Thank you, I'll check it out. I want to be sure to clean my nickles properly.
