The transition from the AT Pro to the VX9 should be fairly easy especially if you mostly hunt in Pro audio mode. For Standard audio hunters, there is no door bell tone on the VX9. It is all Pro audio mode. To my ears the VX9 has even more proportional audio than the AT Pro using Pro audio. Many of the settings are the same along with how iron audio works. Displayed target IDs are much bigger, the target IDs are almost identical to the AT Pro as of the latest software update, wireless audio, ergonomics are way better and no feeding batteries to worry about. The MDMF simultaneous multi frequency technology for land and for saltwater beaches is really good=much better than the Apex, and target ID accuracy on medium depth to deep targets is much better than any AT model or the Apex if soil is not too mineralized.
I tested the VX9 in very iron mineralized dirt so this may be important to you depending on where you live. The VX9's iron bias minimum setting is still too high for the soil here. Good non-ferrous targets tend towards iron too quickly here even with all iron filters on setting 0. A US nickel will start having iron responses at 3" depth here. I reported this to Garrett before the last software update but I got crickets and there was no improvement with that recent update.
Much like the negative feed back that one still hears about the Nokta Legend, that detector and the Vortex series have gone through several software iterations. So have Deus and Deus 2 along with several of the recent Minelab VLFs. Any negative reports about the function of those detectors should be looked at from the standpoint of when the report was made and what software was being used. People that are still complaining about those detectors based on old software versions and hearsay are just being cruel. Being beta testers as owners is just normal now with the age of online software updates. Like it or not, it just is and all of the major manufacturers are doing it to us and they need our feedback whether positive or negative.
If I was really used to the AT Pro, the VX9 would definitely be a viable option for a detector upgrade.
Thanks so much guys. I love my old pro and garrett has been a good company to me, one issue was taken care of quickly. The one thing that impresses me is the ATs build quality, a real warhorse. Do the new machines still live up to this level?
