Vaquero frequencies ?

New member
Im awaiting the delivery on a new Vaquero and have been reading up on it. It has multiple frequencies. Which one should I initially start with? Usually im hunting alone so interference from other detectors is not a problem. Usually the ground has no mineral interference , easy to hunt. But there are times, such as along the river, where the steamboats and trains have left cinders. Those cinders ,I think, destroyed my old Garret TR discrimanator. LOL. It went nuts and never recovered.

I tried the search function but did not find an answer.

It doesn't matter which frequency you pick if there's no EMI or you're hunting along. If I get some EMI, I switch frequencies to see if I can eliminate it or make it not so bad.

Living in the area of old coal mining towns every yard is full of coal cinders thrown off the back porch as everyone burned coal and many picked their own. Inefficient heating units left a lot not burned and hunting these yards are tough at best with any unit. Unfortunately some areas are just downright impossible to hunt ought to cover it and imagine it would vary depending on your area.

Another request. I keep reading about "Monte's power balancing" but have not been able to find this thread. Can somebody steer me the right direction?

14 kHz and the other frequencies are just slight offsets so it really does not make any difference which one you use.

Here you go Hatpin. Monte's article on power balance.

14.3, 14.6 something like that, just an example. Just a slight offset, hope it helps.

The 3 position toggle switches from 14.3, 14.5 and 14.7 khz.
That's a little over 14 thousand cycles per second. That's about where the ringing in my ears is at LOL! Not much variation. The main purpose of the selection is to vary the freq slightly while hunting near other detectors operating in the same range. Otherwise it would be impossible to detect with any stability if two Vaqs or two Cibolas or a V and a C or a bunch of V's and C's were near eachother...you get the idea, right?
I've tried switching it when I hear EMF interference but didn't get much improvement.
EMF sounds a lot like when the battery craps out or when you pat a cat on the back while it's meowing. (in all metal)
I haven't encountered any coal issues but crushed gravel can make my C throw a fit. GB does more than freq in that case.
