Very Faint Signals

Often when I hunt I get a somewhat good but very, very faint signal in my headphones. These signals seem to be so weak that they cannot be accurately pinpointed. The pinpoint signal is best described as intermittent. Not a steady hum but kind of a faint wobble sound.
I try at times to recover these signal. Usually I dig a very large hole (9 inches or better). I have found Iron on the side of the hole at times. Other times I have dug all the way to china before giving up.
Is it worth while digging these signals? Or should I stick to steady repeatable signals?
I also realize that there may be other factors at work. Sensitivity, ground minerals and moisture, etc.

very faint signals..... the deeper the target, the more the crosshair will want to bounce around. Try this.... when you get one of those whispers, resweep it in iron mask full open at -16. Take notice which corner the crosshair wants to hit the most. If it likes the upper left corner, you have an iron presence, most likely the target being a nail to the side of your hole. If the crosshair likes the upper right corner, you have a good target, DIG! If the crosshair is all over the place, concentrate on how many times, on average, the crosshair hits the left 1/3 of the screen as opposed to the right 2/3 of the screen... the left 1/3 is the "true" iron area and the right 2/3 is the "true" non-ferrous area. Confusing??? you thought the dividing line was down the center??? Well listen up This is a great thing to know... on the deepest faintest non-ferrous targets your crosshair wants to bounce back and forth from around the center of the screen to the far right edge of the screen, in essence taking up 2/3 of the screen instead of half.... Several DEEP seated coins, indians, shield nickels would hit these 2 areas only, and in some cases lock on to the center positions where you would think it is over into the iron area. This is the main reason I hunt in iron mask set at -10... to include that right 2/3 of the screen.... Think about it... when you sweep over one of these DEEP old timers, the odds of you getting a hit in the left side of the screen are equal to the right side.... so if you hunt with any discrimination pattern that blocks out that extra area to the left, you will only get a signal from 50% of the detectable DEEP coins that you sweep over. Is this tolerable to you??? I darn sure know it isn't to me I can also say that I dig very few iron targets that didn't "stick" in the far upper left of the screen. Now that you wrestled one of my choice secrets from me, try it out and see if you don't start finding some of those mile-deep goodies. HH, Mike.

Thanks Mike. Just one more or the many explorer tips I've stolen from you.
Thanks, and maybe I can keep up a little..)

Some of the stuff he's learned makes it seem like he's been cheating us huh Ken?
