Walkie talkie question

Went out today, dug 72 coins and found this walkie talkie way under a tree. So if I could get another one they could talk to each other ? How far would it go ? Any info or ideas ? It works as it squeaks when I push buttons.

being motorola it probably has good distance. i was thinking of getting a couple for when i go out with my huntin partner. (hubby)
that way we dont lose eachother as we sometimes do. too bad you didnt have both of em.
 
I'm not positive, but I think they will work with most brands on the market. Range will be anywhere from about 1/4th mile to 15 or 20 miles depending on terrain and anything blocking the radio wave in between.

Some of the channels on a radio of this type require a license ($75 from the feds) for GRMS frequencies. The low power channels are FRS (Family Radio Service) are free to operate on.

That radio only has a range of 2 miles and that 2 mile is in the high power GRMS range....and only line of sight. Through buildings and obstructions the range drops considerably.

As I say we use the FRS channel 12 at work which keeps us in touch within the building and not much further...even though my radios have a 12 mile range - again that is 12 miles under the high power licensed GRMS - not the FRS channels that are free.

They are nice to have when keeping in touch with others in a short range area...like in a store where people get separated...but then now most people just use the cell phone to call the other person to find out where they are.

that type of radio works on standard public frequencies. It will talk to other radios used on the same channels as that one. They have a squelch tone that is keyed when the other radio tries to talk to you. That opens up the squelch and allows you to hear the other radio. A different radio may not use the same squelch tone, so it would not open up the radio to hear it. Squelch is used to keep you from always hearing the static on the radio when you are waiting for someone to talk. That type of radio has a range of about 5 miles. That would be in perfect conditions. Like flat open ground. You can pic up a set of those for about 40-50 bucks. Then you would have three. or a spare if you like. Motorola make several unit in their talk about series. I think they will work with each other . They have somewhere between 16 and 40 channels on the different models. They also say some models work out to 28 miles. Any other questions? Happy New Year

And if you have any doubt whether you can talk with someone else, try taking them to a touristy place like a national park! You have a hard time cutting through the relentless chatter!:lol:
