Walmart ''Great value'' alkalines

I was cruising around Wally world today and came a cross a 48 pack of alkalines for ten bucks ! I always run Duracells or Ever ready's but I had to check these out for the price and quantity. Apparently they are a Walmart in house brand. Has anyone tried these things ? Here's a blurb from their obviously biased promo.

''Great Value batteries are quality items with a long lifespan and they are significantly cheaper than many traditional brands. Our long-lasting AAA Alkaline batteries are also free of mercury, lead and cadmium.''
 
I tried the 9 volt brand in my Pro Pointer. They didn't last very long between changes. I would suggest using rechargeables.
 
Okee doke. I have eight rechargables from my old ACE. Maybe I'll give them a whirl in the ATP this year.
 
Lowes has some off brand they have on sale some times for 4 bucks for thirty.These are as good as any you can buy.If you find these on sale pick up 4 or 5 packs at once I promise you will not be sorry
 
I usually buy the generic store brands. Some of them seem to last just as long as energizers and some do really poorly.
 
I get those cheap 48 packs from the building supply place too....a guy does a little math, even if they only lasted an hour, you find enough clad in 15 min to pay for them easily...so the rest is gravy profit! Mine generally last 10+hrs...I dont use the PP button on the pro, and run sens down 3 clicks from top, so maybe that helps extend them a little?

What other hobby can bring so much fun, relaxation, and PROFIT for less than a buck per 10 hours?:shrug:

I use Hi Grade photography recargables,in both the ATPRO & the Pin Pointer,they last a long time.:detecting:
 
Somewhere I saw a comparison done on several different battery brands. The cheap ones did not last quite as long but the overall cost per hour was lower. I know most people think Walmart stuff is low quality, but at least it is not factory quality rejects like some places that claim good quality.
 
That's a good price for alkalines. But for truly "great value" in batteries for the AT Pro, AT Gold or any detector that takes AA batteries, LSD rechargables are the way to go.

The initial cost is quite a bit higher, but that's quickly recouped since they can be charged over 1,000 times and the only cost is about 3 cents worth of electricity for each battery when you charge it. I believe you can still buy a package of Eneloops at Costco with 8 AA, 2 AAA and a charger for around 20 bucks.

Many people think negatively about rechargables because of what they used to be. Belore LSD (low self-discharge) batteries, rechargables had a very short shelf life, too short for most applications. The latest generation LSD rechargables are said to retain 90% of their power after one year of non-use.

I kept track initially and the run time with Eneloop rechargables in the AT Pro averaged very close to what I got with name brand alkalines.

There's absolutely no difference in performance between LSD rechargables and alkalines in the AT Pro or AT Gold.

Plus with rechargables you don't feel like you're losing any significant money if you change them anytime after they get down to two bars. With alkalines I always tried to push it down to one bar to get the most value out of my batteries.

:laugh: Because I'm a tight wad. Actually I buy Duracells and Ever Readies when I catch them on sale. These batteries were an experiment, and could at least be used for a back up if crappy. I NEVER go anywhere without back ups. But after this thread I may just upgrade my rechargables.

I heard of those a few years ago. I still have eight faithful Duracell's that fed my old ACE 250 for several years, but I an intrigued now. I think that I'll grab some. It sure can't hurt to have extra rechargeables.

I've used Costco's house brand before and they are also OK.
 
Tarajudy has a point there! :rofl: I guess I never thought about it much, plus, I cant have anything good sitting around like a recharger or it would mysteriously vanish..I'd get up early to go on a hunt, go to get my batteries out of the recharger, and they and the charger would be gone!. This I know! :sadwalk:

I have a little 3x2 table I made out of an old sewing machine in my big house where I put my important stuff, like reading glasses, car keys, change, etc...but for some reason, even that appears disorganized and has to get tidied up by my captor..in the off hand chance Better Homes and Gardens shows up for a snap inspection I suppose, my little area is too cluttered or something. Anyway to me batteries are a non issue, as long as they work...I do like how the Pro is AA powered, easy cheap and available anywhere..not like the 9v.

One way to think of it: free beverage of choice for life! :rofl: There's always a set in the infernal contraption, a spare set in the pack, and one 'on-call' in the drawer.

Because I had to pay 500.00-1200.00 for a metal detector :yikes: Now I gotta cut back somewhere , tighten the old belt , eat cheerios for dinner :sadwalk:
 
Question-
Anyone with an expensive new car drive around looking for the most costly place to fill up? For that matter, did you shop around for the best deal on your detector or just write a check for full MAP?
Money is money. As long as my choices (gas or batteries) don't harm or hamper the performance of my car or detector I will continue to look for ways to improve the bottom line and keep more of my hard-found clad in my pocket.

I'm currently trying Rayovacs...
