Lots of subpar units floating around. Got to really play 20 questions to find a good one.

A good 1021 series should give a nice repeatable, if weak, high tone on a 12" dime with the ground balance set on 10 and the sensitivity set on 5.
How far below a 12" dime test you are willing to accept is up to you. I'd probably accept 11.5" as being close enough. There are some 12.5" units out there if you get lucky. But the last two 1021 series 3D's I owned, one was 11.75" and one was a solid 12".

1st Texas Fisher 3D's are a bit different. If you want to buy new you best go through Tom Dankowski and let him try to find you a new model that might be compatible to the old specs.
