War nickle VDI's

Hmm. So much for the "specific year" or "specific Mint" being a possible clue...

The crud thing is also interesting; not sure why it would form like that on some coins...but, on the other hand, any one that DOES have that crud, it would not surprise me if that affects the VDI...

Steve, another thought. When we do electrolysis to remove crud on a coin there are two leads. One attaches to the coin and the other to a spoon or whatever is used. The spoon becomes the anode. Crud leaves the coin and collects on the spoon. the same may be what is happening with the war nickel. The manganese in the nickel becomes the anode and the soil or whatever is leaching the manganese then is depositing crud to the coin.
