Water Levels in Georgia

jimb

New member
Is anybody taking advantage of the low water levels in Georgia to do any lake bed hunting? Like Lake Lanier?
To long a drive for me, Just asking?

I saw a news piece and there was at least 5 guys way in the background swinging away .......you gotta know they were finding some nice goodies....

Corp of Engineers stuff.

It is getting ready to be a real problem. The city of Atlanta gets it's water from Lanier and they are saying if things do not change it will run out in 90 days. So... something has to be done. There is talk of the governor using the NG to take over the dam from the corp of engineers. The really stupid part is the "endangered species act" is requiring a lot of water to be released for the benefit of some mussel in Apalachee bay. The river level has actually been going up due to the CE letting extra water through the dam. Alabama get's the benefit of having the river level kept up, their lakes are full and Alabama has no watering restrictions in place, while we approach disaster. It really stinks and if it come's to the point of people in Atlanta not having water for showers and flushing... there will probably be violence etc.

Someone has got to do something soon. I think someone should harvest and eat all the mussels and that will take care of that.

Where is governor Joe Brown when you need him? We should fire a shot over the dam and take it at dawn!

Just came back from a short hunt at Lake Guntersville, Alabama and I can tell you first hand that the water level around here is FULL. Same thing with Logan Martin, Henry Neely and so on, all have normal water levels. However .... MANY local authorities in our surrounding areas do NOT want folks to even water their lawns since we're in this long lasting drought.
I live on top of Sand Mountain and our grass is brown and goes CRUNCH when walked on and the ground is like concrete.
Here's the WAMMY .... Golf courses like East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta uses in the neighborhood of 1 million gallons of water EVERY DAY to keep their greens in good shape and that's just one golf course.
Now I don't know about the official government standing in the Atlanta area but here in Bama they simply told them ( golf courses and large consumers) to NOT use the water sprinklers until further notice or they will be SHUT DOWN and FINED HEAVILY !!!
Talked with a buddy of mine from Florida that said he played golf at East Lake with friends just 2 weeks ago and the grounds were still wet that morning from the sprinklers running.
Think the Atlanta area politicians like to golf ? I think so  If water is used for COMMERCIAL use then large quantities are allowed in Georgia, like these golf courses I mentioned, that $hit ain't right either and shouldn't be allowed. Seems the folks in charge have their priorities all out of whack concerning their every day citizen and tax payer.
All kidding aside, I agree that whatever it takes to get our neighbors some water relief ..... it should be done, and pronto.

Hopefully we'll see some relief in the form of RAIN soon .... but I ain't holding my breath waiting on the first drop to fall either.

Good Hunting

But can you stick on scuba gear and skip the beach? Sorry to say, we are supposed to get hammered tonight with storms.
Australia was facing a water crunch the last tiem I looked. When the light looks darkest it will come. Hang in there.

Golf courses, especially well to do ones like East Lake, recycle their water. Those lakes are not everywhere on golf courses simply for aesthetics. I would jump through hoops of fire to hunt some of these old golf courses here in the Pittsburgh area.

Golf courses are not exempt. They can only water the greens and tees. The rest of the course can only be watered with recycled waste water. Whoever told you they are using that much water is mistaken. In fact, East Lake has been hand watering the greens because they were in such bad shape. No way they can use that much water on greens and tees.

81 days until the levels at Lanier will be below the level that the current system can pump water out... water riots on the horison, I bet someone will pay attention then. There will be hearings and the politicians will find someone to blame, other than themselves.

I think we have lost our collective mind... rescuing seals and whales. Putting mussels above people... we've gone off the track somewhere. Remember a few months ago when it was national news about some wounded whale swimming up a river? All the resources and people trying to turn the animal around and make it go back to the sea... (it was wounded by a propeller and was, I am certain, swimming up river for safety from sharks and such). 100 years ago we would have killed it and had a big BBQ. We've gone crazy...

The water bans are too little too late. They need to stop giving building permits to big developers until they catch up on infrastructure... but that goes against everything politician is. Too many people elect politicians to steal from Peter to pay Paul, (and they think that they are Paul).. but there is no Paul... we are all Peter.

Do a little google search on golf course water consumption, it'll amaze you.
Then, consider ALL of the golf courses in the Atlanta area and big water commercial consumers like power stations, Motels, Restaurants, mining operations for crushed rock in construction etc., and then the large population of Atlanta and surrounding areas that solely depend on Lake Lenier and it becomes pretty scary to be living there when the water quits flowing thru the pipes.
Not intended as an argument .... I feel your pain on the subject, it just flat out stinks that the fat cats sat on their duffs and let it get to this point for such a large city like Atlanta.
Old news but the same results when it comes to politics verses John Q. Publics welfare. Makes one wonder if they ever considered a drought that would last this long, I guess not !

Anyway, on a brighter note we're supposed to get a few rain cells around midnight here and some more tomorrow according to the almighty weather service.
Hope they're right.

It has been SO dry here. It's never, ever been this dry. This will add a few days of water but trouble is coming... Atlanta is chock full of people who think the government and everyone else owes them something and if their water run's out there will be riots and Atlanta will again burn.

I don't live in Atlanta, I live in Cartersville, above Kennesaw, below Cassville... near Kingston. I live right off I-75 and Hwy 20. I have quite a few customers down there though. Thankfully most are in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, (the rich). I agree with you about the "fat cats" and I see it in the neighborhoods I service, they are very, very upcale homes, old money and new... big money, really big money and the lawns are green. They all have landscapers and they all, most of them abyway, water the lawn.

Here in Cartersville we get our water from Allatoona lake, which is low too but i have not heard any numbers about when it will run out. We have the same problem with the corp letting too much water out to keep river levels up. I don't understand that, in a drought. I can see it when it's not a drought. I think the problem is that the government move's too slowly when change is needed due to lawyers and judges. Someone is going to have to do something very soon or push will come to shove because of health and safety issues.

Here, n Bartwo county, we have allowed run away development. My wife is a CPA and she has clients, homebuilders, who have not sold a home all year and there are huge developments going up all over the place. We have had watering restrictions even last year when we had rain, due to over-development and not enough infrastructure. Someone need's to learn how to say NO to developers and their money.

Maybe i'll put the rainkacket on my tector and just go enjoy the rain....

I feel your pain guys. Here in SE Kansas we had little rain for two years until last January. Some of the local lakes I fish were over 12 feet low with the boat ramps high and drive and the docks on the ground. This year we've had about a bazzilion inches of moisture and everything, amazingly, filled up. Seems that it has rained every day this year. When I lived in the south it seemed to rain every afternoon there. Now maybe its just me though it seems that your typicall southern weather pattern has shifted west a couple of hundred miles and we here in the midwest got all your golf moisture this year. Everytime I hunt its like digging in a mud hole. I wouldnt want to trade it for the world!
