Waterproof Couplings:ausflag:

Hungry

New member
Good Day Fellas, I have been land and beach detecting for the last 5-6 years. I am now looking at Water detecting. I would like to be able to fit 8" - 10" - 15" Coils to an Excalibur 2, and am looking to find Waterproof Couplings suitable for this purpose. I will only be using this in 5' water or less, and on the beach, keeping my E-trak for the Parks and Footy Fields. Can anyone help with what type of couplings are suitable. Thanks in advance, Bob

Smear some Shoe Goo (Walmart, etc) over it nice and thick. This stuff is a nice clear rubberized waterproofing compound meant for fixing waterproof boots, shoes, etc. When you want to switch coils it'll peal off fairly easy.

hummm interesting:shrug:

No! No! Guys! Using Shoo Goo will only make it water resistant. The longer it is under the water and the deeper it is under water, as little as two feet, the pressure of the water will push in on any tiny air space. It that pressure is greater than the strength of your Shoo Goo then you will get a leak. Gulfhunter is correct. I'll try to provide a URL for the coil fittings that are used on the Garrett water machines. They seem to hold up well. At least mine have never leaked.
The Shoo Goo thing is great if you want to take a shower with your detector. But if you want to get into the bathtub with it, sooner or later you will find water in the electronics.

Explore that and I think you'll find the parts that will do what you want them to do. Jim

Glad I didn't cut those wires. So, none of the connectors work in less than 5' of water, even the ones that come with the WOT and the new Sun Ray?

Have anyone heard about Plasti Dip ?

"Plasti Dip is a multi-purpose air dry, synthetic rubber coating that can be easily applied by spraying, brushing or dipping. Plasti Dip resists moisture, acids, abrasion, corrosion, skidding/slipping, and provides a comfortable, controlled grip. It remains flexible, stretchy and will not become brittle or crack in extreme weather conditions; -30

Is Plasti Dip made to withstand the pressure of 1 or 2 atmospheres for an hour in a through the hull fitting on electronics?

I think I know the product. It makes nice handles on hand tools and is a good insulator for battery terminals. Didn't think it was made for underwater applications. What's the Milspec rating for creating a waterproof seal?

If you have a 1/4" hole in a plastic fitting and you put a 1/4" coil wire through that hole and apply Plasti Dip around that opening on the inside and the outside will it withstand the ambient water pressure at 50' for one hour? If it does, I am getting some. Jim
