Receintly picked up a Goldquest SS. Took it out a few times and was very impressed. Dug lots of deep targets. Amazing depth on nickels! Didn't find gold but I did get a small silver bracelet. Being strickly a beach hunter I decided that I wanted to try and make this unit a little more water resistant. I had already waterproofed an Explorer and several Sovereigns. Being the Goldquest SS was already in such a small package to start with, the job didn't look too difficult. I was lucky enough to find a clear waterproof case that fit everything perfectly! Being I never touch the controls once I initially set up my machine, I decided to keep all inside. Just had to hard wire the coil and headphones and fabricate a way to support the electronics. You do need a volume control so I'm using my Killer Bees for now. I left room for a volume control switch if I ever decide to go with a waterproof headset. It really was a pretty simple project. The case by the way is guaranteed leakproof to 100 feet. Don't think I'll ever be in past 5 feet so it should work out fine.

This might sound like a dumb question, but I'm not much of an electronics guy...I was curious as to what you meant when you said you "hard wired" the coil? I'm getting a goldquest soon and I'd like to use it on the beach from time to time, maybe in about a foot of water. Don't plan on submersing the electronics, just the coil. Thanks.

"Hard wired" means that the coil wire as well as the headphones are attached to the circuit board directly with no connector. Mr. Bill is right as the Goldquest box is sealed quite well from the elements. I just wanted to make sure if mine ever encounted an ocean dunking it would be OK. HH Bob
 
so using it in a foot or 2 of water is no problem. Just don't dunk the box. Good huntin, John
 
Thanks to Mr. Bill. I should have my goldquest this friday, just in time to take it out to the desert for some nugget hunting. I am very exited to try it out, and will let you all know what I think of the detector and whether or not I find any gold!
