Waterproofing an Eric Foster detector

New member
I have been debating waterproofing my beachscan mk2 / goldquest ss detector. What is the costs involved and is it really practical to have it done.i go several times a year to the beach and like to get in the water usually only waste deep but as you know waves can catch you unaware and get knocked off your feet.
So should i just invest in a waterproof machine like a headhunter pi unit ? Or have my unit waterproofed and who is the man that can do it ?

Jason, there are several posts on these forums about waterproofing various machines. (Including one of mine.)

Your's can be done using the same methods at a cost of about $60.00 unless it is unusually large (I'm not familiar with your machine).

Good Luck,

CJ

The best waterproof case is Ikelite. If you watch the big auction site long enough you can find a case that has not had any holes/controls drilled in it. This may cost some $, or you may get one for $10 like i did, it all depends on who else is interested at the time. Use waterproof potentiometers (Vishay is coming out with their P13SM soon, not quite available to the public yet, unless you order a lot). If you use regular pots (or even the p13sm) waterproof them with APMHexseals. Find a IP68 (waterproof) switch to use for the on/off switch, and use Lapp or similar strain reliefs where the headphones and coil cable comes out of the case.

Ikelite is heavy, and can be tricky to drill (use the plastic bits or end mills - slowly), so you may settle for a pelican case (or similar product such as an otter box), or Aqua-pac with cable-clams (as some have posted about).

Don't go with the headhunter pi, it is a great detector, but It is just like your machine, but without the SAT control. Worst case scenario, chest mount your control unit in an aqua-pac with cable clams. Adjust it while knee / waist deep, seal it up, then hunt. That would be more waterproof than the alternative. Do a findmall seach on the products I have mentioned and you will find lots of informative posts.

thanks for the response.
i checked out the info and the one i like the best is the CableClam Waterproof fittings because i want to keep the unit as stock as possible in case i would sell it in years to come and that looks like the best of both worlds .Sure i may have to crack the case open to change the knob settings but i usually don't mess with them once i have them set.The CableClam are a little pricy but worth it if you would take a dunk in the water.i sure don't want to drown my detector but sadly i will have to waterproof it after vacation.
thanks for all the info again

HH and GOD bless
