We all know this but....... (ground balance)

We all know this but worth repeating. Some of you probably have read where I got a Compadre with the 5.75" coil and purchased a 8" coil to use on it. We have all read many times, ground balance this, ground balance that, I always knew that is was important but thought that it was over rated. Well today after installing the 8" coil on the Compadre I tested it inside the house on some jewelry items, it worked great, no interference, stable, very sensitive. I only had a little while before dark to try it outside in the lawn, I tossed some coins on the ground and it hit them well but I had quite a bit of falsing, too much in fact. I could hardly move my coil without it beeping, I adjusted the sensitivity to max, minimum ,and everywhere in between and it didn't help so I knew then it was the ground balance. I turn the ground balance trimmer counter clock wise (not sure if that is adjusting it positive or negative) a tiny bit and gave it a try, it took about 99.9% of the falsing away. Tomorrow in the daylight I am going to "fine tune" the sens. and the ground balance. So now I know from experience that it is true when they say it is important to have a detector with a manual adjustable ground balance if using other coils.

ski wizz thats why i dont even want to bother with machines with no ground balance, I had a cibola and it hit good depth in this badd sand but would often get way off ground balance and it efected it badly, but hay in woood chips who cares

I may be mistaken, but somewhere I believe I read that ground balance issues become more noticable as the coil gets larger due to the fact that more ground is being read by the detector. I know my DeLeon runs quiet and smooth with the factory settings with the 7", the 8" and the 8X9, but gives some chatter with the 9X12.

Bob it straight up and down about 6=8", Ski. Then you'll know. If sounds on the uplift-too negative. If on the downstroke-too positive. Quiet means somewhere between the two.

It is 10:30am Eastern time, I opened the control box on the Compadre turned the sensitivity to about max, re-adjusted the ground balance, took it back out in my yard and tested on some coins. No longer is it falsing, have not done a true measured coin/coins air test yet but from eye balling the distance from the coil to the coins distance I am really impressed. I am heading into town to grab a few things and something for my wifes birthday (birthday is December 1st.) and am taking the Compadre with me and will give it a try at a park and will report back with my results, I am really excited to see how it does.

Even if hunting in wood-chips or a neutral sand area, a way misadjusted GB can be bad. On many Tesoro models, if the GB is cranked too positive you can lose responsiveness to big silver dollars, silver and clad halves, and sometimes even quarters.

The Sidewinder has an external sensitivity and discrimination dial/adjustment on the faceplate and I am sure it has and an internal ground balance pot. I just don't have a Sidewinder to look and see where it is located on the board.
