Wearing Rings We Find...and...

I'm not one for wearing rings but have found many mens rings. Well, a couple days ago I found a very nice ring that suited my liking and decided to wear it today. Big mistake....:stars: A couple of folks I work with know I metal detect and always ask what I find so I tell them and they are always excited when I say I found a ring.Today they looked at the ring I found and made me feel pretty bad that I wore it. One person told me I should post it on the Internet and find the owner. Thats a good one because I'd probably get 10,000 owners that would swear it was theirs.Another person said it was probably a wedding or birthday present and I should try and find the owner.Another said, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT....wow I thought I found his long lost ring.:stars:
I don't think I can wear this ring after that......at least not for awhile. :nopity:
I think If I find rings I want to wear in the future I will not tell anyone where it came from so I'm not made to feel so bad.
If I had any idea as to who owned the ring I would be happy to return it but where do you draw the line ?I've given rings to my wife and kids... not sure if they tell anyone where it came from.
Anyways its something to think about.

Yep, it's easy for someone to say you should try and find the owner of every ring you find, but it's just not possible. If they have some identifying marks inside, like initials or SS#, you have a chance, otherwise it's nearly impossible. And where is this mythical site you are supposed to post on to find the owners of lost stuff??? I say, enjoy the spoils of your good fortune and if you are lucky enough to find the owner of a found treasure, good for you!!
 
From the land of the Bluenose......interesting post for sure. have never had that happen but if you are like most in this hobby you have returned your fair share. Wearing my chain of rings is a great conversation piece and do get the odd "Oh that one is mine>"

Leslie, yup I have returned items and have done my fair share of good deeds but boy....some people can really push your buttons. Sometimes its not so much what they say but how they say it.

Funny that when you talk about finding coins know one seems to care about ownership but the minute you talk jewelery.....brace yourself for the barrage of questions.
I'm thinkin I'll start writing the questions down and write a book one day.

Don't sweat it and pay no attention to others. It's yours unless the owner pops up out of nowhere. Unless a ring is clearly marked with something significant or identifyingy there is no way to tell who the owner was or how to find them. Telling you something like they told you is about as stupid as telling you to try to find the owner of a coin you found and advertising on the internet would be about as looney as one could get. HA. Wear the ring and enjoy it.

Yeah like the ring I recovered for my friend the other day, which really made me happy. But had I found that ring in a park there would have been no way in the world of connecting it to the owner and it would have been my ring. As detectorists we have salvage rights. :) Spanky should apprise his friends of that.

Yeah and advertising on the internet would be like advertising a fifty dollar bill and asking someone to identify it. :rofl: Where do these people come from? Tell them you didn't just fall off a turnip wagon.

My friend and I have been using Keene Coin Dredges for a number of years to suck up coins and jewelry from the bottom of fresh water lakes in the Midwest. Here is a picture of a 1.10ct diamond that was in a 14kt gold Masonic ring that was buried in about 4' of sand in an old beach. I had it melted down and made into another ring.[attachment 11675 MyRing2.jpg]
