Weekend Finds!

James N.D.

New member
Got out a few times this Labor Day weekend but the older finds were few and far between. I didn't make it to the spot I wanted to try this weekend but I am for sure going next weekend to try and find some nice Barber Coinage I hope. What I did get were alright finds but the silver sure is getting tough to find. This is what I got. I found 4 Silver this time which consisted of 1 Washington Quarter dated 1944 which was a mere 2" deep if that, 1 Mercury Dime dated 1942-d which was a good 8"+, 1 Roosevelt Dime dated 1956-d and 1 Canadian Dime dated 1956. I found 1 Older Jefferson Nickel dated 1958-d. I also came up with 4 Indian Heads which 3 were in the same hole and they are dated 1885,1896,1906, and 1907. The 3 that came from the same hole are in really bad shape which I thought to be odd because I have found Indians at this site before and they were never in the shape these 3 were in. Tough Luck I guess! I also found another 28 Wheats dated 1912,1914,1918-d,1920-s,1925-d,1929,(2)1930-d,1932-d,1939-d,1941-d,(2)1942-d,1944,(4)1945-d,(2)1946-d,(4)1947-d,(2)1951-d, and (2)1958-d. Plenty of Wheats but were was the silver? Someone must have been sniping the silver at these sites or I just couldn't hit the silver that was there. I guess better luck next time. I also found a few Misc. Items. They are a 25c Play Coin, 2 Keys, an old Mother of Pearl Button (I think that is what they are called?), another button that says Scovill MFG Co. Waterbury on the back and a mystery Item. And Lastly, the Clad Coinage Count. I found 12 Quarters, 34 Dimes and 104 Pennies. I would have found some Nickels but it would have taken forever to find them in all the trash I was in during the weekend. The pics are below.[attachment 34558 Silver.jpg][attachment 34559 Nickel.jpg][attachment 34560 Indians.jpg][attachment 34561 Wheats.jpg][attachment 34562 Misc..jpg][attachment 34563 Button.jpg]

Just thought that there would be a few more silver since the Wheats were there. But it was a good weekend of hunting non the less and just makes me look forward to next weekend and wanting to work harder for the finds. Thanks for the post and hope you continue pulling those nice old coins and relics from that park of yours. Good Luck and HH.

James you always seem to find nice and interesting stuff! The park is still producing, but I wish you were closer as I'd like to take you there and learn a few things from you. There's a lot of stuff in this park (old & new) and I'm sure you'd do better there than I have so far. The dig everything approach seems to yield the best surprises there and I'm looking forward to doing some deep scanning with my WOT or possibly another large coil.

I also wish I could swing on in and try that Park of yours and show you a few things with the Explorer since I am pretty good with the machine. I know there is plenty more older coins in your Park and time will tell. You just have to keep up what you are doing to keep finding those old elusive coins in amunst the trash. I wish you luck and remember if the site you are at is heavily laiden with trash, that the WOT Coil and other larger coils will get less depth and poor seperation due to too many items in the ground which in turn will get masked since the detector won't be able to read all the targets at the same time. Good Luck and HH.

I would say you had better luck than I did James.......:) Nice looking wheat field you have there. I would venture to say that there has to be some silver where you were at. Might be worth going back there again sometime. I'm heading over to the eastern part of Washington this Friday for four days. Don't know how much detecting I will get in, but there are a couple of places I want to check out. I might try my hand at a little gold panning also if I have the time. HH.

This seems to be the detectorist's lament. Where has all the silver gone, long time passing? But you are doing well, James. The amount of silver lost is finite, modern coins are junk, and therefore the silver coins are a non-renewing and limited resource. But not to worry, the stuff is still out there, as you keep showing me

My daughter got married this weekend, so there was really very little time to detect. I found only 1 (1926) wheat penny all weekend(not counting Thursday night). Now doesn't that make you feel much better?

Congratulations on your daughter getting married! Last year this same time it seems that silver coins just start to get hard to find. The same thing is happening again like last year. Last year towards the end of the season, Barber Coins diminished along with Merc's and I was finding more Roosevelt Dimes than anything. But silver is silver and what you find is rewarding enough. Too bad you weren't able to detect very long but there is always tomorrow. Good Luck and HH.
