weird headphone question

last weekend while detecting at a local school i frequent i had a very strange problem. while detecting in the middle of the old ballfield in different areas the explorer2 would become erratic. during one of these times i took of my headphones and unplugged them to rest for a minute and as soon as i did the explorer stabilized. i though this was funny so i plugged them back in and as soon as i did the explorer went crazy again. did this several other times with the same results. just wanted to know if anyone has ever had this same problem? could it be the headphones were effected because i was sweating and maybe some moisture got into the earpieces? doesnt make sense at all and since then i have detected without the headphones. the headphones are grey ghosts. i remember this happening about 2 other times several months ago but just forgot about it until this past weekend. if anybody has any ideas feel free to let me know what you think? i am thinking about getting another set of headphones later on when i can afford them and curious to see if i have the same problem at the ballfield or anywhere else. have a good one and happy hunting all.

Check for broken wires in the cable of the headphones and also where the plug goes into the detector. When headphone give a problem this is the first thing I check out as they get abused over a period of time and the wires will break in the cable and give some odd problems. If they are Gray Ghost they can be sent back and be repaired reasonable. Just try it again with the headphone in and wiggle the cable and see it it will get worst or better, if it does it is a good chance it is bad and the headphones sent in for repair.

Just another thing to throw out there, I wonder if it's a case of higher level of mineralization there or some other kind of electrical disturbance that is causing the Explorer to run too hot and unstable. You may not be picking up on this when you unplug the headphones and the rig just simply seems to run better. It might not be a bad idea to try dropping your sensitivity down and ground balance with the headphones plugged in. Up here in MN there a quite a few places that I have to drop my sens down to 18 just to run a stable setup. Then again it could be the headphones are faulty. Detecting without headphones is simply not an option for me. I don't hear the properly variation in signals and changes in the ground, plus it just typically draws bad attention anyway. I am curious to know how this turns out for you, keep us posted.
