I have seen club hunts mark their coins for prizes....maybe you found one that wasn't found at the hunt
I have seen club hunts mark their coins for prizes....maybe you found one that wasn't found at the hunt
i never thought about that...sounds reasonable to me

I tried to research it on line but no luck as I am sure you did also. Maybe it was someones good luck piece and that was the date they found it : January 11th 1923. I 'll keep watching this post as I hope someone has a answer.:minelab:

That is a nice coin!
Someone HAD to like it a LOT to carry it that much.
Maybe their Lucky Coin and their birthdate?
HH

yea it could be someones birthday...who knows..and i guess the only person that WOULD know lost it

Gary I agree it is possibly a birthdate, but in my humble opinion it was to deep to be a club hunt coin. Remember I seen the coin in the hole and it was at a 45 deg.angle. All we could see was part of the rim. The lesche was all the way in the hole. The lesche is 11.5 " from point to top. So hopefully some one can help with the mystery of the numbers. And to Quote Charles from NY you are still a "RatBassssss/" :yikes:

HH BiLL IL
hahahahahahah yea yea...you woulda got it if your coil would have went over it....i was just in the right spot

that's worn pretty good if given as a birthday present.

note how worn the numbers are vs the coin itself.

i would think a silver dollar gift, relative to that date(?) would be in much better shape than that.

is extremely deep for a club hunt.

still a nice find!

I'm not a bible thumper but I inherited my great grandfathers Bible and it says in 1 Corinthians 11-23 "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you" So Just another Guess. But it does also look that the coin was worn out far before the Numbers were stamped into it. Mr Locust, This coin of yours is going to drive me nuts So I am done racking my brain for the night. Good luck

In Russell Rulau's book "US Tokens" 1700-1900, they list allot of US coins stamped with numbers for hard times tokens. Most have names that are stamped along with the numbers, but it makes sense that some would just be numbers without the store's name and they aren't listed in a token identification book because there is no name to trace them back to, hence, no way to identify where they came from and no reason to list them in the book. The other thing that suggests that your coin is a possible token is how worn the coin was prior to it being mutilated, most the photos in Rulau's book, those coins as well, were very worn prior to someone stamping them; almost like they didn't want to stamp coins that were in good condition. Just a guess:shrug:

yea, neat find!!!

thanks for the ideas guys.....it does sorta make you wonder tho what the meaning for the numbers were for...

Was going to suggest an old miners tag but there is no hole in it and they were normally only 4 numbers...Nadda clue but a keeper indeed. Nice find.
