Well gang, I've decided I need to go to Gettysburg this summer, and I have questions.

Been "talkin about" goin for many years, but I guess after all the reading, and lookin at pix and watchin movies and videos while I was laid up this past year I hear all those voices calling me to come. Anyway, I have no knowledge of how they do things there so for those who may have been there I could use some help. For starters, I will be traveling with 5 peeps, probably stay 2 nights (lodging?) Are there guided tours or is this a do what you want to do type thing? If either, what would you recommend? I dont want to be wisked by each place of interest though, I want to be able to take pix and compare pix and such. Anyway, anything you can tell me about your experiences would be great.Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that they have guided tours and you can also walk the place yerself.
There is alot to do/see out that way along Rt 30.

You can get a guided tour (when I was there),But I went on my own and took my time reading all the markers.You can drive all over the place there ,just stay on the road.I was there all day and didn't see it all.Worth while seeing it.I think I was there back in the 80s.Good luck Dirt.

They do have bus tours and and you can walk the battle fields. Do some Internet searches for more info. I live about an hour from there and only been there once years ago. That is so sad on my part.

Step back in time and see and feel American true history at her best and walk hallowed American ground.

Gettysburg battle field is 27 miles around, think about that for a moment, 27 miles. You can take the tour on the bus and pass all the Monuments, all 1000 of them or you can rent a bike and ride the whole battle field stopping to look and read at each stop if you can and have the time or drive around the battle field and take time to read and see everything and feel what those boys did way back when in only three days of battle.

General Longstreet Monument, the red rose was put on the Monument from a very very old lady as I set in my car and waited and watched the limo driver help her to and from the Monument, my first thought was she is a Longstreet.

I would like to go back and take my time and really get to see the Battlefield. I am sure they probably have it on a CD now or an MP3 player. I think you will really enjoy the trip!!

...I've been studying maps and reading personal accounts and watching all the tapes and DVDs I can, but mostly studying the maps. One thing that strikes me is as important as what Col Chamberlain did on Little Round Top was, Gen Bufords actions upon first seeing the ground was absolutely critical in everything that followed. He seems to me a bit of an unsung hero. Cant wait to see it myself.
May have to alter my plans a bit though, I, like Lawrence in Alabama, have a family that does not share my passion, they would be bored after the first 30 min. I on the other hand would like to spend 3 days walking the whole thing. I may go by myself for the first time, maybe try to find a buddy that has interest in it to go with me, we'll see. Anyway, thanks for the input guys and gals.
